Employees learned practical, field-ready techniques from conducting a walk-around inspection before backing a vehicle or trailer, to using the three-second following distance rule in normal conditions and the six-second rule in rain, snow, fog, or construction zones.
Given that Vermont's roads and weather can change quickly, particular attention was given to matching speed to conditions. This is a critical skill for crews traveling to emergency calls in the middle of the night or during a storm. Drivers operating larger vehicles and loaded trailers also received guidance specific to those situations, including the increased stopping distances and rollover risks that come with a higher center of gravity.
A Culture of Safety That Goes Beyond the Cab
Safety Day at G.W. Savage extended beyond the road. The event also covered other safety topics, such as PPE use, jobsite hazards, and lifting techniques, reinforcing the company's broader commitment to a safe work environment for every employee, on every job.
