Gout is a rheumatic disease that causes the deposition of uric acid crystals in the tissues and fluids. About 3.9% or 8.3 million adults in the United States have this extremely painful condition. A gout patient for almost two decades, Spiro Koulouris has recently shared useful gout diet facts on his blog. This detailed article discusses how painful gout attacks can be avoided by following the right food habit.

In his article, Koulouris discusses the correlation between meat and gout in detail. He recommends people with gout limit the consumption of red meat to no more than twice a week. He also recommends avoiding pork and focusing more on fish as a protein source. Chicken is another safe option, particularly chicken breast that has 15% of its calories from fat. All types of organ meats should also be avoided because they are high in purines.

Koulouris also talks about an optimized gout diet that he calls “The 80-10-10 Diet.” This diet delivers 80% of an individual’s daily calories in clean carbohydrates and 10% each in the form of protein and fat. He also shares a 10-step guide to creating an optimized diet plan for people with gout.
“Try eating 80% of your daily calories as complex carbohydrates, such as fresh vegetables, legumes, some fruit, 100% whole-grain breads, pastas and rice. Eat mostly beans for protein. 10% of your daily calories can be protein, such as chicken breast, turkey, fish, lean red beef and lamb. Avoid pork, processed meats like sausages and hot dogs — avoid all seafood as well like lobster, shrimp and crab, for example. Finally, eat 10% of your daily calories as fat like milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, eggs and so on. Drink only water, herbal teas and coffee. Avoid processed foods like snack bars, cookies, cereals etc. Do not fry your food. Only boil it or bake it in the oven. BBQ meat is fine, too. Cook only with 100% extra virgin olive oil. Do not use corn oil, vegetable oil, canola or other types of oil that are toxic to your health,” mentions Spiro Koulouris.
