God Created Me Coily Helps Children Accept and Love Their Curly Hair Through a Book & Doll Companion Set

Live on Kickstarter, God Created Me Coily is a story of hair, identity, and self-love.

God Created Me Coily, the all-new book and doll companion set helping children learn about their identity and self-acceptance, is live on global crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and raising funds to bring the project to life.

So many children of color in the United States grow up their entire lives feeling ‘ugly’ and unhappy with their appearance because their ‘hair isn’t straight’ and ‘skin not white.’ Recent statistics have shown that only 13% of children’s books contain multiracial content and that there are more white and even “animal” characters in books than any other race. The media, toy, and book industries have failed to keep up with a diversifying America and this lack of representation in mediums children engage with is failing children of color.

“As a licensed cosmetologist clients would often my curl-based salon in Durham, NC with stories of their childhood along with their own children’s challenges of learning hair acceptance. I remember, myself, as a child thinking, ‘Why are my pigtails so short in the second grade?’ As a child I just had to deal with it and learn to accept my hair,” says founder Robin Butler on the inspiration behind the project. “I wanted to write this book for children with textured hair to help them build their esteem and everyday confidence.”

There is a distinct lack of Black characters in children's books and the distinct lack of Black dolls with hi-texture hair in the toy market. The God Created Me Coily Set and accompanying Nia Doll aims to change that with books that teach young girls to embrace themselves, their authentic self, and discover their own creativity and uniqueness.

“Black children's stories deserve to be represented in the book and toy industry. For so many reasons we have been looked over and not accounted for. In 2020 it has to stop, vicious cycle of a lost identity for a culture. Our children deserve better,” adds Butler. “We are the only company combing story and representation where we create a world where your black child learns and feels empowered by their identity.”
