Executive Summary
Instant noodles are dried blocks of precooked noodles sold in a pack. They need to be boiled in a pot of water, or microwaved in a bowl of water usually for 2-5 minutes before they are ready to eat. The noodles by themselves are tasteless, and these packs come with flavouring sachets in powdered form and/or as seasoning oil. There are also ready-to-eat, sealed packets of instant noodles that contain a precooked block of noodles and seasoning already mixed in and packed in a cup-shaped container. These only require simmering in hot water that can be directly poured into the container for 2-3 minutes before they are ready to be consumed.
Wheat flour, palm oil, and salt are the common ingredients used to prepare these noodles before drying and packing them. The flavouring commonly comprises of salt, monosodium glutamate, seasoning (based on taste), and sugar. There are two popular methods of drying the noodles once cooked. The original method of drying was to fry the cooked noodles into a crispy block (a method still used in Asian countries). In western countries, noodles are air-dried before packing.
The last few years have seen a surge in the demand for instant noodles. This increase in demand stems from the numerous options of taste and flavours. Ease of preparation, affordability, shelf-life, and ease of storage are some other factors that contribute to the increase in the sales of instant noodles.
