When most people think of Bali, they invoke images of pristine beaches, luxury suites, exquisite dining and swim-up bars, but for the Balinese, the high-end luxury resorts are more distant than they are for dreamy tourists 5000 miles away.
For many communities, there are few paved roads, no running water or electricity, and contact with neighboring villages—let alone the outside world—is almost impossible. It’s the side of Bali that most tourists never see.
Floating Leaf Eco-Retreat regularly holds events in which they can provide tangible assistance for important community needs. Through their donation programs, they are helping people in need in their community and throughout many villages in Bali.
“Our Eco-tourism efforts are aimed at conserving precious natural resources and diverting waste from the already overflowing landfills,” said Michael Dolivek, owner of Floating Leaf Eco-Retreat. “We strive to involve the community in deciding exactly which philanthropic efforts will be of most help and interest to them.”
Other projects include building water purification facilities, playgrounds and greenhouses to subsidizing local farmers so they can grow nutrient rich foods using traditional and organic methods.
“Our mission is to provide clothing, supplies and the tools needed to help people in need, inform supporters about issues affecting the community and help people connect with local organizations or issues that resonate with their skills, values and personal experiences,” said Doliveck.
Mikaku, as some of the villagers call him, also teaches regular English classes to the children of their village as well as yoga classes for the community. Classes are free of charge and all Balinese are welcome and can contact Floating Leaf for times and more information.
Michael “Mikaku” Doliveck and his wife, Putu, are the owner-operators of Floating Leaf Eco-Retreat, a sustainable retreat in Ketewel, Bali, that hosts group yoga, spiritual and wellness retreats as well as cultural and adventure tours. The retreat is scheduled to open in December, 2013 with its artistic, state-of-the-art design and architecture.
Michael and Putu urge visitors to Bali to experience the warmth and charm of the Balinese people and to take a moment during their visit to give back to the community. Floating Leaf can help arrange many types of outreach programs from community assistance, donations and teaching to sustainability, continuity and other environmental projects.
