Gerald Welch Announces "The Hypothesis of Unified Origins": A Paradigm-Shifting Theory on the Nature of the Universe
December 2024, St. Louis, MO – Author and independent theorist Gerald Welch, has officially announced the forthcoming release of his groundbreaking new book, The Hypothesis of Unified Origins. Slated for publication in early 2025, the book brings together three interrelated models Welch developed over nearly two decades: Inverse Gravity, Unified Gravity, and The Recycled Universe. Welch's work challenges long-standing theories in cosmology, offering a powerful new approach that may reshape our understanding of dark matter, dark energy, and the dynamics of cosmic expansion.
"The Hypothesis of Unified Origins," or HUO, aims to integrate what is known about gravitational forces and cosmic phenomena into a single, overarching hypothesis that speaks to the natural order of the universe. Speaking from his study in Austin, Welch emphasizes that this book marks the culmination of fifteen years of research and exploration. "The work I've put into HUO has been about drawing connections—bringing together all three of my hypotheses together into a cohesive, testable model," Welch says.
The Origins of a Unified Idea
Welch's hypothesis was born from curiosity and a hunger to reconcile observational anomalies within a single framework. Unlike traditional models of cosmology, which often require additional forces or particles, such as dark matter or dark energy, to explain gravitational effects, Welch's HUO attempts to describe the universe through a natural and straightforward lens.
"For years, I've grappled with the inconsistencies within mainstream physics," says Welch, who brings a fresh perspective not only due to his theories but also because of his non-traditional path in the field. "Many of these cosmological models seemed to be adding patches to old frameworks, rather than building a truly new understanding. I wanted to eliminate the complexity, to follow Occam's Razor—explain the universe with fewer constructs, not more."
The first piece of Welch's model, Inverse Gravity, plays a crucial role in redefining cosmic repulsion and expansion. Unlike traditional gravity, which is attractive, Inverse Gravity proposes that repulsion is a natural state—a force embedded in the fabric of space that contributes to cosmic acceleration without requiring mysterious forms of energy. "If you start to see gravity as more than just an attractive force, but also possessing an intrinsic repulsion under specific circumstances, suddenly, the universe doesn't need dark energy to explain its expansion," Welch explains.
Welch also developed the Hypothesis of Unified Gravity (HUG), which takes the traditional Newtonian and Einsteinian concepts of gravity and combines them with Inverse Gravity. "We need to rethink what we mean by the 'fundamental forces,'" he says. "Unified Gravity, within the HUO model, means there are conditions in which both attraction and repulsion coexist—forming a more comprehensive understanding of spacetime dynamics."
Finally, The Recycled Universe (TRU) model challenges the conventional Big Bang narrative, suggesting that the universe undergoes ongoing cycles of contraction and expansion—essentially, a cosmic recycling program. "There's something deeply satisfying about viewing the universe as cyclical," Welch says. "Instead of a single explosive origin that leaves questions about what came before, TRU presents an image of perpetual renewal—where energy and matter are in constant flux, and each cosmic cycle informs the next."
Challenging Conventional Wisdom
Welch knows that his hypothesis faces an uphill battle. He acknowledges the skepticism that often accompanies challenges to established theory. "I understand that I don't have formal credentials in physics," Welch says. "But over the past fifteen years, I’ve worked hard to build a hypothesis that stands on solid theoretical ground, and now it’s time to share it and see where it fits within the broader scientific conversation."
Welch’s hypothesis aims not only to describe the universe. but also to align with real-world observational data. He is particularly interested in how HUO could provide a simpler explanation for the galaxy rotation curves that dark matter is often invoked to describe. "I'm working with data from THINGS and SPARC galaxy surveys," Welch says. "The beauty of HUO is that it produces comparable results to the Lambda Cold Dark Matter model, without needing invisible entities. Everything I'm proposing here is meant to fit the observed phenomena more naturally, without needing dark energy or dark matter to artificially fill in the blanks."
According to Welch, Unified Gravity offers an interpretation of gravitational interactions within galaxies that could fundamentally shift our perspective on mass and motion. "The way galactic arms rotate, for instance, shouldn't require extra mass we can't see," Welch argues. "If gravity is not just attractive but has a dual nature, some of these discrepancies start to make sense. It’s the duality of attraction and repulsion, operating in the right proportions, that drives the cosmic order."
Broadening the Conversation on Cosmic Cycles
In many ways, The Hypothesis of Unified Origins is about more than just uniting previous models; it's about broadening the conversation on what’s possible within cosmology. The cyclical nature of the universe, as envisioned in the TRU model, is a significant departure from the conventional linear narrative provided by the Big Bang theory. According to Welch, this perspective reorients us to a universe that has been shrouded since man first began thinking about it.
Welch also points out that HUO offers a foundation for re-examining other major phenomena within cosmology, like cosmic inflation. "The idea that the universe underwent rapid inflation immediately after the Big Bang has always struck me as a patch solution," Welch says. "If the universe operates under the principles of Unified Gravity and Inverse Gravity, perhaps inflation is just a natural outcome of those dynamics—something built into the cycle rather than an inexplicable anomaly."
Moving Forward
As the book nears its release date, Welch is focused on bringing HUO to a wider audience, including the scientific community that he hopes will engage with his work. "I know it's an unconventional route," Welch says with a wry smile. "But science is supposed to be about questioning everything, about curiosity driving us forward, whether or not we hold traditional titles or credentials. I'm confident that HUO has something to offer—whether it’s providing a different lens on gravitational dynamics or prompting a reevaluation of cosmic cycles, the idea is to keep the dialogue going."
Welch sees The Hypothesis of Unified Origins as a starting point, not a conclusion. "This is just the beginning," he says. "We have so much more to learn about the universe, and my hope is that this work will at least be one step in that direction. It's about curiosity—and inviting others to be curious with me."
