-- Family lawyer and author Gabriella Pomare is widening her work on the stage of a relationship before it ends, with a third season of her podcast “Before It Breaks,” a new anonymous listener segment called “Dear Gabriella” and a second book, “Before It Breaks: A Modern Guide to Love, Conflict, Repair & the Conversations That Change Everything.”

Pomare spent more than a decade as a specialist family lawyer in Sydney, negotiating custody arrangements and dividing assets for families whose relationships had already cracked open. Her current work looks at the months before that point, when something is changing between two people and neither one names it.
“I wanted to move the conversation earlier,” Pomare said.
She argues that relationships rarely end on the day someone leaves. They change gradually, as communication turns into logistics and affection into familiarity, while the routines of family life cover a deeper loss of connection. Phones play a part. A Pew Research Center survey of U.S. adults found that 51% of those in a relationship say their partner is often or sometimes distracted by a cellphone while they are trying to have a conversation.
The shift started with her first book. “The Collaborative Co-Parent,” published by Morgan James Publishing in New York in 2025, argued that a family does not have to be destroyed because a relationship has ended. As she spoke about the book, audiences kept asking about life before the ending instead: whether they were unhappy or simply exhausted, why they felt like roommates after having children, and whether a relationship had become impossible or only neglected.
Pomare launched “Before It Breaks” in 2026 to take those questions on. Early episodes covered emotional distance, online intimacy, work as the third person in a partnership, motherhood and friendship circles. The second season added long-form conversations recorded in Australia and New York. In the third season, listeners can submit questions anonymously for “Dear Gabriella.”
The work has also taken her across the United States. After an earlier media tour through New York and Los Angeles, Pomare returned in March, appearing on Good Day LA and CBS Mornings and delivering a keynote at the Global SheTalks conference in California before further media appearances on 16 November 2026 for her upcoming U.S. tour in New York.
The second book takes the podcast’s questions further. It covers resentment, emotional distance, the mental load, identity, ambition, secrecy, and the part social media and artificial intelligence now play in how couples relate. Pomare is direct about where repair ends.
“Not every relationship should stay together,” she said. “Repair isn’t always the right outcome. But I do think people deserve clarity before making enormous decisions about their lives. Are we incompatible, or have we stopped communicating? Is this a red flag, or something TikTok has taught me to call one?”
