Food4Patriots Commends Creation of App That Feeds Homeless

With so much food going to waste in the U.S. each year, an app has been developed to enable businesses to easily donate excess food to local food banks. Food4Patriots applauds the participating businesses.

According to a recent article on the CNET website, an app called “Feeding Forward” has been developed that connects businesses having surplus food with nearby homeless shelters. When companies have surplus food, they tap the Feeding Forward app and provide details of their donation. A driver is then dispatched to quickly pick up the leftovers and deliver them to food banks.

Roughly 15 percent of the U.S. population does not have access to enough food, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Yet food scraps are the nation’s second largest source of waste, behind paper. Leftovers make up more than 30 million tons of what is sent to dumps each year.

Officials from Food4Patriots, the supplier of emergency food suitable for long-term storage, survival and emergency preparedness, commends businesses that use this app to help the needy gain food. In fact, several times per year Food4Patriots makes donations to food banks that aid victims of natural disasters.

All of the nutritious, good-tasting, long-lasting and affordable food in Food4Patriots’ 72-hour, 4-week, 3-month and 1-year emergency kits can be prepared in less than 20 minutes and requires nothing more than boiling water. It is kept in easy-to-store Mylar pouches, which eliminate air, moisture and light. The food has a shelf life of 25 years.

“When we started putting together our emergency food kits, the first two things that came to mind were taste and nutrition,” said Allen Baler, partner at 4Patriots LLC. “We knew that those two aspects would be extremely important for people who had become dependent upon their emergency food supplies following a disaster.

“But a close third is variety because no matter how hungry you are, you’d rather not have to keep eating the exact same thing day after day. A variety of foods during a crisis situation will not only provide different and essential vitamins and nutrients, but also a big psychological lift. And when you’re in survival mode, mental health is just as important as physical health.”

Those who order one of the Food4Patriots Emergency Kits also receive four reports: “Top 10 Items Sold Out After Crisis,” “The Water Survival Guide,” “The Survival Garden Guide” and “How to Cut Your Grocery Bills in Half.”
