Here are three tips for better communication.
Choose the Location Wisely – Choosing the right time and place for serious discussion is a big part of effective communication. For instance, it isn’t a great idea to try and talk to a teen about serious issues when they are getting ready to go to an event or talking to their friends. It would be unwise to try and communicate complex ideas or plans when the family is involved in media or playing with gadgets.
Even the “family table” which is often considered an important element in good communication is likely to produce superficial chatter about the day’s events and things. There are too many other distractions, even at mealtime. Rather, set aside a spot in the home that is calm and peaceful.

Conflict Destroys Communication – When speaking, attempt to avoid negative words or angry comments, even when disagreeing with another viewpoint. Heating up a discussion to the point of anger will only cause others to shut down and stop listening while they argue their own side. No one really wins.
