CBP will auction 24 million pounds of seized aluminum in Riverside, CA, on July 23, marking the final public sale managed by CWS Marketing.

-- Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is preparing for the second and final public auction of seized aluminum profiles, which will take place on July 23, 2026 in Riverside, California. CBP is working with sales agents Amentum and CWS Marketing Group to run the event for Aluminum Auction in California.

This is the closing sale for a batch of aluminum profiles that CBP originally seized in 2017. The first auction moved about 10,000 tons of the material. What remains for this second sale is more than 24 million pounds, or roughly 12,000 tons.

About the Material

The aluminum is currently held at the Amentum Consolidated Storage Facility in Riverside. It is packed into 623 shipping containers stored outdoors, and those containers are included as part of the sale. In total there are about 161,409 non-functional "pallets" of aluminum. Most of it is 6000 series aluminum alloy, a high grade material used widely in manufacturing, with a smaller portion made up of A356 alloy. An independent lab confirmed the aluminum can be recycled and remelted for use in industries such as aerospace, construction, automotive and transportation.

How the Auction Will Work

The July 23 sale will offer one bulk lot covering the full 24 million pounds of aluminum stored in shipping containers. Bidding will happen live in Riverside, and people who can't attend in person can bid online through CWS Marketing Group. Only buyers who have been approved by CBP ahead of time can take part, and anyone bidding needs to put down a refundable $100,000 earnest money deposit.

Inspection Appointments

Buyers who want to see the material in person can schedule a visit to the Riverside facility on one of these dates:

  • July 8, 2026
  • July 15, 2026
  • July 22, 2026

Why This Sale Matters

Selling off forfeited material like this is part of how the federal government manages seized assets responsibly, and the proceeds go back into law enforcement programs and victim assistance funds. There's also an environmental benefit worth noting. Recycling aluminum uses roughly 95 percent less energy than producing it from scratch.
