Ferrygogo Study Finds Route Access Outweighs Price For UK Ferry Travellers

Ferrygogo's UK Ferry Travel Survey 2026 finds that route availability, port access and whole-journey convenience shape ferry decisions for UK travellers more than ticket price alone.

-- Ferrygogo BV. has published findings from its UK Ferry Travel Survey 2026, a study of 197 ferry-interested travellers conducted between May 4 and May 31, 2026, examining route preferences, booking priorities and travel habits. The results show that route availability and whole-journey practicality carry more weight in booking decisions than crossing fares alone.

Among respondents planning trips to France, a subgroup of 53, France emerged as the most planned ferry destination for the next 12 months. This pattern is concentrated among self-drive holidaymakers traveling with cars, campervans, pets and luggage, for whom the ferry is weighed primarily against the Channel Tunnel rather than against flying. The survey found that for these travelers, the comparison centers on the convenience of the entire road journey rather than on which option completes the crossing fastest. Further detail on these findings is available in Ferrygogo's analysis of ferry markets for UK travellers.

While 43.4 percent of France-bound respondents cited lowest price as a factor in their booking decision, the survey recorded a broader set of practical considerations shaping route selection, including port access, arrival locations, departure times and cabin comfort. Respondents also pointed to clearer route comparisons and more direct booking access as features that help them select crossings suited to their complete driving itineraries.

"France remains the practical choice for British ferry travellers, where the real decision is often between the ferry and the Channel Tunnel," said JW van Tilburg, Co-founder and Director, Ferrygogo. "Travellers are taking their own cars, campervans and luggage, so they are choosing the option that works best for the entire journey, not simply the fastest crossing."

The findings inform how Ferrygogo presents route and port information across its platform, with an emphasis on the practical factors that shape whole-journey planning for self-drive travelers heading to France and other European destinations.
