-- Fernie Cultural Universe, an initiative under MDLG, is building an original animation IP universe drawing inspiration from Eastern myths, classical literature and philosophical fables. Two 2D animated IPs are in development, exploring themes including truth vs illusion, self and reflection, tensions between personal boundaries and the outside world, shifting identity, and spiritual growth.
Rooted in Eastern classics such as Journey to the West and philosophical reflections on the self and the universe, these works are far from trivial children’s cartoons. Instead, they are art-house animated shorts crafted for adult audiences.
The two animated projects feature distinct creative focuses. The first delivers an Eastern mythological narrative that goes beyond simple retelling, centering on truth and falsity, identity, illusion and spiritual evolution. The second unfolds as a philosophical parable, delving into personal boundaries, self-integrity, external pressures and individual choices.
Visually, the works blend premium hand-drawn 2D animation, Eastern imagery, allegorical storytelling and globally accessible aesthetics. Target audiences span animation art enthusiasts, devotees of Eastern culture, festival-goers and lovers of artistic short films.
European creative talents have joined the project to forge a contemporary, artistic animation language with universal cross-border appeal. Respecting the core spirit of Eastern culture, these partners excel at translating Eastern narratives into visual grammar that resonates with European and global viewers.
To realize this vision, the project has established partnerships with top-tier European practitioners across artistic animation, creative production, visual arts and international film production, covering animation directors, screenwriters, production crews, creative studios and cultural consultants. These global talents will present Eastern myths and philosophical ideas to worldwide audiences through modern, artistic animation with international appeal.
Concept design, screenwriting and visual exploration for both animations are well underway. Official release dates remain unconfirmed and will be announced in phases based on project progress.
Parallel to animation development, the Global Founding Membership Program is open for enrollment. As the earliest witnesses of the project, founding members gain staged access to exclusive behind-the-scenes materials vetted by the creative team: conceptual artworks, excerpts of character and world-building lore, spoiler-free creation journals, thematic interpretations and philosophical essays.
