Fernie Cultural Universe: A Cross-Cultural Animated Art Ecosystem Rooted in a Scottish Castle

Share this news:

-- Fernie Cultural Universe, a project under MD LOCAL GLOBAL LIMITED (MDLG), is guided by its core values of Civilization, Faith, Forgiveness and Freedom. Far more than a mere medieval castle, it is a long-term cultural ecosystem centred on Eastern philosophy, animated art and cross-cultural experiences. Taking Fernie Castle, a historic Scottish heritage site, as its physical anchor, the project integrates Oriental gardens, original animation IP and European castle heritage to build a sustainable cultural system spanning physical venues, original creative content and digital platforms.

The project stands out for three exclusive, irreplaceable assets: the profound historical legacy of a 16th-century Scottish tower; an Oriental garden nestled within the castle grounds, creating a striking contrast of an Eastern sanctuary inside a European medieval fortress; and an original animation IP universe crafted around Eastern myths and philosophical fables.

The project operates on three core pillars. The first pillar, Fernie Animation Castle, builds upon Fernie Castle and its surrounding estate, combining Oriental gardens, an in-castle animation art museum and immersive visitor trails. The Eastern garden serves as a spiritual gateway, while the ancient castle acts as a tangible venue for animated art to unfold. The second pillar covers Original Animation Development. Drawing inspiration from Eastern mythology and philosophy, premium 2D animated shorts explore themes of truth and illusion, self and reflection, transformation and identity. The third pillar is the Digital Animation Art Museum, an online platform curated around philosophical themes that breaks geographical boundaries to reach global audiences.

For the Oriental garden zone, the project has commissioned the team of renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. Retaining the castle’s original historic character, the design weaves in the tranquility and contemplative spirit of Eastern courtyards to form an immersive retreat for visitors to pause and reflect.

On the animation IP front, the project has partnered with top-tier European talents across artistic animation, creative production and international film production, including animation directors, screenwriters, production crews and visual artists. Inspired by Eastern classics such as Journey to the West, the original IP series adopts refined 2D animation to deliver philosophical visual fables with international aesthetics, examining truth and falsity, identity, boundaries and spiritual growth.

In terms of community development, the project plans to launch an early co-creation community. As witnesses and companions of the project, members gain phased access to exclusive behind-the-scenes materials including conceptual artwork, creative journals and philosophical essays. The team emphasises that members are not merely audiences, but active participants and co-builders of this evolving cultural venture.

This place is not a final destination, but a living cultural universe still growing and evolving. Visit the official website for full details.
