-- For some time now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been concerned about the volume of food thrown away by consumers because of “use by” date labels. Last week the FDA sent a letter to the food industry suggesting that labels such as “sell by” and “use before” be changed to “best if used by,” according to a National Public Radio article.
An FDA deputy commissioner said that “best if used by” phrasing would help consumers realize that the date label is about quality rather than safety, and that products do not have to be discarded after the label date, assuming they are stored properly.
“Use by” dates are usually more of an indication of when the taste of food is no longer optimal, rather than about product expiration, according to a food program manager at the King County Department of Public Health in Washington state.
