-- An Elegant Affair with Purpose

The 2025 Epworth Race Day took place against the stunning backdrop of Flemington Racecourse, in the exclusive Skyline Room, bringing together a vibrant and fashionable crowd. Guests arrived in a sea of red gowns and designer hats, embodying the event's theme, "A Touch of Red." Beyond the race-day glamour, the event’s central focus was raising funds for Epworth Hospital’s vital acquisition of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) technology, a key diagnostic tool in the fight against life-threatening pancreatic and gastrointestinal cancers.

The theme of red took center stage in both fashion and spirit, with an atmosphere that was as much about style as it was about making a difference. Attendees, including healthcare leaders, philanthropists, and special guests, united with one common goal: supporting a cause with the potential to transform lives.

Unexpected Entertainment Brings the Crowd to Life

The atmosphere reached new heights when the crowd was treated to a surprise Broadway-style performance at precisely 4 pm, courtesy of Mike Snell Entertainment. The production, led by former Aladdin Disney star Mike Snell, took attendees on a thrilling musical journey, resulting in an unexpected and lively performance that had guests singing and dancing to the music. The brass band playing disco tunes added an exciting, unexpected element that set the tone for the rest of the evening, marking this year’s race day as a standout event.

Mike’s entertainment company, known for its high-profile productions at venues like Crown Casino and Sydney’s luxurious social events, certainly delivered on its promise to elevate the evening to unforgettable levels of glamour and entertainment.

A Night of Generosity and High Stakes Auctions

The fundraising efforts were driven by both silent and live auctions, which saw a range of valuable items up for bid. Auctioneer Nicholas Brooks, from Marshall White, captivated the audience with his charisma, guiding the auction with enthusiasm and energy. As the auctions progressed, a high-stakes raffle took center stage, featuring prestigious prizes such as a Hermès diamond Kelly watch, a Valentino handbag, and a sparkling diamond tennis bracelet. The raffle was enthusiastically hosted by Kris Greenwood and Elias Stamas from GJK Facility Services, adding to the excitement of the evening.

All proceeds from the night directly benefitted Epworth Hospital’s cutting-edge work in gastrointestinal and pancreatic cancer diagnosis and treatment, ensuring that the funds raised would help save lives for years to come.

Associate Professor Andrew Metz Speaks on the Future of Cancer Detection

A key moment of the evening came when Associate Professor Andrew Metz took the stage to speak about the crucial role of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) in cancer detection and treatment. Professor Metz is the Director of the Jreissati Pancreatic Centre at Epworth and a renowned gastroenterologist specializing in pancreatic disease. Trained at the University of Melbourne and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, he is internationally recognized for his expertise in pancreatic cancer and innovative endoscopic treatments.

His research and clinical work focus on early detection techniques for bowel and pancreatic diseases, including groundbreaking work on genetic risk factors. At the event, he shared with the crowd how the acquisition of new EUS technology will allow for earlier detection of cancers, reducing the need for invasive surgeries and shortening recovery times, thus offering hope to many who might otherwise not have access to these critical advancements.

Proud Sponsorship and Visionary Leadership

The evening’s success was made possible through the generosity and leadership of major sponsors, including George Stamas AM, the Founder and Executive Chair of GJK Facility Services, and his wife, Jaqui Maree Stamas. George, a key figure in Epworth Hospital’s philanthropic initiatives, also serves as the Vice-Chair of the Epworth Medical Foundation. Jaqui Maree Stamas, a passionate advocate for vulnerable communities and a respected philanthropist, was instrumental in bringing the event together, ensuring that it was not just a celebration but a moment of true impact for those in need.

Through their efforts, George and Jaqui have supported numerous causes, from hospital innovation to housing and employment initiatives for vulnerable Australians, cementing their legacy as tireless champions of positive change.

A Legacy of Impact

The 2025 Epworth Race Day was more than just a fundraiser — it was a gathering of community, creativity, and compassion that demonstrated the collective power of individuals to drive real change. The event marked a turning point in the fight against pancreatic and gastrointestinal cancers, and the generous support of attendees ensures that Epworth Hospital will continue to lead the way in advanced cancer care.

As the evening drew to a close, the sense of camaraderie and commitment to the cause was palpable, ensuring that the 2025 Epworth Race Day would be remembered not just for its elegance, but for the lasting difference it will make in the lives of many.
