Plan for Mars Colonization. According to a study published in the New Space Journal, Musk has described his plans for this event, which were originally created back in 2002.
According to Elon Musk in the study, humanity is going to eventually face extinction. The alternative is to become a civilization in space as well as a multi-planetary species. The reason Mars is the focus of this colonization is that it is full of resources and has days that last 24.5 hours. This makes it better suited to support any type of self-sustaining colony.
The main challenge facing engineers and scientists is improving the cost per ton that is required to transport materials to Mars. The costs need to be reduced by five million percent to make this a viable endeavor.
In addition to outlining Musk’s plans for the colony, the paper provides a review of the system architecture needed to create a spaceship and rocket that would be capable of transporting supplies and people to Mars. It goes on to compare the potential performance features that will be needed, as well as vehicle designs.
If things go well, it may be possible to create these ideas within a time span of 10 years, with the full realization being between 40 and 100 years, depending on other advances. Musk and the entire team at SpaceX are working to make as much progress on the idea as they possibly can.
According to the report, Musk is reported as saying, "Mars would be quite a bit of fun because the gravity is about 37 percent of what is on Earth. As a result, everyone in the colony could enjoy living heavy things and bouncing around."
The 16 page paper is available online for review.
