Educator Empowerment Seminars Inspire Hope for South African Teachers and Youth

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world," Nelson Mandela once said. This vision was brought to life at a recent workshop held at Castle Kyalami, where over 150 South African educators gathered to tackle critical challenges such as bullying, high dropout rates, and inadequate learner support. Hosted by the Scientology Volunteer Ministers, the Learner Support Seminar aimed to rekindle passion and inspire transformative change in South Africa's education system.

The seminar sparked a wave of enthusiasm among attendees. One educator reflected, “I had actually given up as a teacher and found no joy in my profession anymore. After seeing the Tools for Life, I have rekindled my purpose as a teacher. You have no idea how much you have done for me.”

This reinvigoration is particularly crucial given the challenges highlighted in the November 2023 Harvard University report, “Growth Through Inclusion in South Africa.” The report notes a concerning trend: falling income per capita, the highest unemployment rate globally at over 33%, and youth unemployment exceeding 60%. Effective education is pivotal to reversing these trends and fostering sustainable change.

Feedback from the seminar underscores its significance. “This is the most comprehensive set of life skills I have ever come across,” said one educator. Another, who is pursuing a master’s degree in education, remarked, “Everything I ever needed is in the Tools for Life.” Another participant hailed it as “the best workshop I have ever attended, period.”

Since its inauguration in 2019, Castle Kyalami has been a cornerstone for the Scientology Volunteer Ministers' outreach efforts, focusing on various sectors, including education. These seminars utilize the “Tools for Life,” a set of practical skills developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard. To date, over 26,000 new Volunteer Ministers have completed these 19 courses in South Africa, applying their learnings to enhance their communities.

The ripple effect of these seminars extends far beyond the classroom. By empowering educators with essential skills and renewed purpose, the program creates a cascading impact on students and their communities. The goal is to uplift entire communities through the improved capabilities of educators, fostering a positive cycle of change.

Sandile Hlayisi, Chairperson of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers, emphasized, “These seminars are more than just workshops; they are catalysts for change. We are inspired by L. Ron Hubbard’s vision that ‘From Southern Africa will spring the next great civilization on this planet.’ By empowering our educators, we are taking significant steps toward realizing this vision.”
