“Designing The Next Generation” Goes To Germany

Awards series “Designing the Next Generation” created by Over My Shoulder Foundation and Cumar, and represented by Dawn Carroll and Patti Austin, goes to Germany to participate at the prestigious Leaders of Design Council Conference.

The Over My Shoulder Foundation (OMSF) announced their participation in the upcoming Leaders of Design Council Conference in Berlin, Germany sponsored by Cumar Marble and Granite. The OMSF & Cumar will be bringing their collaborative mentoring mission called "Designing The Next Generation", to inspire and urge design professionals to join their advocacy, share their time, expertise and wisdom by mentoring upcoming generations of designers.

OMSF is a non-profit organization founded by Grammy-award winning singer and songwriter Patti Austin together with stone designer Dawn Carroll to promote "mentorology" -a concept they created that involves cross-discipline mentoring between music and visual design. Carroll herself has received awards for her work as a stone designer at Cumar and has mentored Patti Austin on design. Together, Cumar & OMSF have created "Designing the Next Generation", which is a series of awards given to people who share their belief in the power of mentoring not only to push music and design concepts to a higher level but also as a way of changing lives.

The Leaders of Design Council in Berlin, Germany is Carroll and Austin's next stop following a speaking engagement at the recent Design Bloggers Conference in Los Angeles, CA. Following on that event they also received an ASID (American Society of Interior Decorators) Excellence in Design Award this year in Boston, MA. The Berlin event will be held from April 3-5, 2013 at the Hotel de Rome. Ms. Austin will also be gracing the event with a live performance on the gala night on April 5.

Cumar's General Manager, Dave Connor, is pleased to sponsor the event. "Dawn has carved out OMSF's niche in the mentoring world while managing an award worthy design career at Cumar, which is currently in its 8th generation of leadership in stone sourcing and fabrication in Everett, MA," Connor said, adding that "mentoring is a necessary everyday activity at Cumar as there is no trade school to attend for this craft".

"In the stone world, mentoring is the only way that the special craftsmanship has been able to live on from generation to generation," says Carlotta Cubi, Cumar's Executive Vice President and the daughter of the owner, Ivo Cubi.

Austin credits Carroll and Cumar for the continuing development of her craft through mentorology. "Much of my musical success is because of my mentors, most notably the close guidance of my godparents Quincy Jones and Dinah Washington. I am the luckiest girl in the world," she exclaimed. "Currently I am being mentored by Boston’s prestigious design community starting with Cumar. With Dawn’s expertise as my guiding light, I am reaching for my dream of becoming an interior designer."

Dawn Carroll sums up how the mentor-mentee relationship works, saying: "As designers we recognize potential the second we enter a new space. With confidence we understand exactly what we can make a room, become. 'What do you see that I can be?' is what a spiritless space will ask us, 'What am I missing that will make me complete?' is the question it begs us to answer. I've come to understand the many similarities between a designer and a mentor."
