-- Most products and environments are designed for visual appeal, efficiency, and functionality. Few are designed with sensory comfort in mind. Recognizing this gap, Bangladesh based DBL Ceramics has launched the world's first Inclusive Design Guideline: a research-driven framework designed to help architects, designers, educators, manufacturers, and institutions create sensory-friendly products and environments for individuals on the autism spectrum.

The initiative reflects DBL Ceramics' brand philosophy, Designed for Life. For the company, that philosophy extends beyond durability and aesthetics to ensuring that design serves the needs of every individual.
Research has long suggested that autistic individuals experience color, texture, pattern, lighting, and spatial environments differently. While these findings have existed globally for years, practical design tools translating those insights into everyday products and spaces have remained limited.
To bridge that gap, DBL Ceramics partnered with POP5, Kalyani Inclusive School, National Institute of Neuro Sciences & Hospital, and Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital to test these global findings in Bangladesh.
The research was conducted over six months in two phases. The first phase evaluated children's responses to different colors, textures, shapes, and patterns using controlled design elements. The second phase applied these findings in real classrooms and homes, where environments were redesigned using calmer colors, simplified patterns, and sensory-considerate materials.
The results were consistent. Children showed stronger preferences for light, muted colors, matte textures, simple shapes, and repetitive patterns. When these preferences were incorporated into their environments, educators, caregivers, and specialists observed improvements in focus, engagement, and comfort, along with reduced signs of distress.
These findings became the foundation of the Inclusive Design Guideline, which translates behavioral insights into practical design principles covering color, texture, pattern, lighting, spatial planning, materials, flooring, wall surfaces, interiors, apparel, footwear, paints, and educational environments.
To encourage industry-wide adoption, DBL Ceramics has made the guideline fully open-source and available for free download through its website: https://neurotiles.dblceramics.com/
The framework is intended for use across sectors, allowing professionals to incorporate sensory-conscious design principles into both products and environments.
The first product created using the guideline is the NeuroTiles Collection, an exclusive tile range engineered for neuro-inclusive spaces. Developed using the preferences identified during research, the collection features calmer color palettes, softer visual balance, controlled textures, and sensory-friendly patterns designed to create more comfortable environments for neurodiverse individuals.

By introducing both an open-source design framework and a commercially available product range based on its principles, DBL Ceramics aims to move inclusive design beyond awareness and into practical implementation.
The company plans to continue expanding the initiative through further research, additional product applications, and broader collaboration with educators, healthcare professionals, designers, and institutions.
