Consumer Finance Site Investigates Hidden “Grey Charges” in Bill Payments

Leading consumer finance site has looked into some commonly recorded deceptive bill charges and shares details of its findings.

CNN Money reports that 1 in 4 Americans fall victim to deceptive or hidden utilities and bill charges in 2012. This may be due to the fact that only 1 in 10 consumers carefully check every transaction on their bank statements, making it much easier to miss any overcharges or mistakes. has compiled a helpful list of the three top “grey charges” and tips to avoid them for greater consumer vigilance and awareness. The site announced the publication of the list in the following statement that was released to the press.

“The research that we have conducted makes it clear that these so-called “grey charges” are not fraudulent per se, but their apparent legality doesn’t diminish the annoyance and inconvenience they can cause to unwitting consumers. The top unwanted charges are:
- Free trials that switch to paid automatically: Consumers that sign up for “free” trials, especially while shopping, online often forget to cancel the trial before it switches to a paid subscription. Another common scenario is for delivery delays to cause a time-out on the trail before the customer has had a chance to utilize the trial.

- Unwanted subscriptions: These are bundled into consumers’ online shopping baskets or added to their orders during the checkout process via a pre-checked box.

- Negative Option Marketing: This is a retailing tactic whereby consumers are sent an additional item that was not ordered.
