When homeowners are planning to replace old drafty windows, choosing the new windows’ frames is just as important as the glass itself.

-- A window is made of several components, and while the glass itself is considered the most important part of it, that does not mean that other parts are less important. Frames, for example, are extremely essential. When homeowners are planning to replace old drafty windows, choosing the new windows’ frames is just as important as the glass itself.

There are are many types of window frames that can be found on the market, but there are five that are considered the most popular for various reasons. They are, sorted by cheapest to most expensive, aluminum, vinyl, fiberglass, composite, and wood.

Aluminum, being the cheapest option, it is also the most popular option as it requires close to no maintenance, in addition to being strong, durable, and lightweight. However, when it comes to insulation, aluminum loses the competition, as it provides very poor insulation and conducts heat easily and very quickly. This makes aluminum come in last when considering energy-efficiency.

Vinyl, on the other hand, is slightly more expensive than aluminum. It is also widely popular, due to being affordable and needing little maintenance. The advantage the hold over aluminum is that they can be filled with insulation, causing them to become moisture-resistant and have better energy efficiency than standard frames.

Fiberglass, however, is the most lasting window frame option. It is strong and durable, it resists fading and cracking, and does not expand and contract easily. It is extremely energy-efficient due to its great thermal performance. On the downside, fiberglass is a more expensive option that needs regular maintenance and requires painting from time to time.

Frames that are made of composite material include a combination of aluminum and wood, or vinyl and wood. This type of frames has the best of both materials. They are very strong and durable, in addition to being energy-efficient and requiring little maintenance. Wood frames, on the other hand, are considered the most beautiful frame types. Wood is a traditional option, as it is a natural insulator and very energy-efficient, but requires regular maintenance. Moreover, both composite and wood frames are expensive options for window frames.
