Fakespot, an impartial Google Chrome extension, is now being used by more than 100,000 Amazon users for spotting fake product reviews. It is available for download on the Chrome Web Store and can be used to spot fake feedback not only on Amazon, but also on Walmart, Sephora, Best Buy, and Steam.
How it works
According to a 2018 survey, 50% of 18-34-year-olds read online reviews before making a purchase. However, due to extensive efforts to manipulate reviews, consumers are now more cautious and distinguish the real reviews from fake ones. This is what Fakespot developed their chrome extension for.
In an attempt to prevent hijacking of consumer reviews, Fakespot has been developed in 2016. Using natural language processing and artificial intelligence, the program automatically identifies and extracts fake and dubious reviews on products on online stores, especially Amazon. To help consumers, it uses a grading system, which displays A, B, C, D, E, or F (highest to lowest), depending on the number of detected unreliable reviews.
