Homeowners in Canada and the US with Kitec piping in their properties have until January 2020 to benefit from a class-action lawsuit. They may be able to claim an average 50% of the cost of repair or replacement.

-- Time is running out on compensation claims linked to a class-action lawsuit related to Kitec plumbing. Homeowners in Canada and the US have until January 9 2020 to make a claim for compensation.

After Kitec piping and fittings were recalled, a class-action lawsuit resulted in a US$125 million settlement. There is no need for homeowners to have experienced issues with the product to make a claim for compensation. Kitec is made from a flexible aluminum pipe, with inner and outer PEX layers and is fitted with brass fittings. Both the piping and fittings have been recalled due to their tendency to deteriorate. The piping can be identified by its bright orange and blue colors, signifying hot and cold water, respectively.

Kitec was sold between 1995 and 2007, with an estimated 292,000 properties in North America having the piping installed. The cost of replacing Kitec could cost between $4,000 and $15,000, depending on factors such as the size of the home. Many homeowners may still be unaware that there is an issue with the piping in their home.

A similar issue is that of polybutylene (poly B) piping, which can lead to burst pipes and other issues. Urban Piping Ltd is the Canadian leader in poly B replacement, offering services replaces polybutylene piping. PEX piping is a common choice for switching away from poly B pipes, but not all PEX piping is equal. Whereas Kitec piping consists of an outer layer of PEX pipe and brass fittings, Urban Piping uses Class A PEX piping, which offers advantages over both polybutylene piping and Kitec piping.

Poly B piping has also been the subject of lawsuits in the past. They took place as far back as the 1980s and into the 1990s, with the hugely successful Cox v. Shell class-action suit taking place in 2005.

Urban Piping Ltd is a leading Canadian plumbing company with offices in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. They can replace both Kitec piping and polybutylene piping with quality PEX piping. They offer all plumbing services from their Calgary office and specialize in poly B piping replacement in Edmonton and Vancouver. All of their work is carried out by their own plumbers without the use of any contractors. They have decades of experience in the industry and are licensed, bonded and insured.

Homeowners don't have long to make a claim for compensation, but should still look into replacing outdated plumbing to prevent problems including burst pipes.
