-- CALWOF (California Wildlife Officers Foundation) exists to provide financial and civilian support to the brave California Wildlife Officers and their families. Game Warden Casey Thomas recorded an interview with our CALWOF team, discussing her experience as a game warden, a day in the life of a game warden, and how her canine "Canna" helps her on a regular basis. CALWOF is currently holding a fundraiser to donate cooling vests to the canine units that assist the Wildlife Officers in the heat of the summer.
The interview goes in-depth into many aspects of Casey’s life as a wildlife officer. This includes talking about the inspiration that led her down her career path, as well as her most memorable day, involving seizing over seventeen thousand pounds of illegal processed cannabis in an effort to quell the illegal cannabis cultivation that damages the local environment. Another big focus of the interview is the role of Casey’s canine partner, Canna, and how she acts as a life-preserving tool on the job.
“Utilizing a canine to control a situation has on numerous occasions not only saved officers and the public’s lives, but they’ve saved the lives of the offenders they apprehend who may create a lethal force situation that the canine was able to neutralize without having to use lethal force,” states Casey Thomas during the interview
The focus on Canna during the interview is linked to the fundraiser that CALWOF is having, raising money to ensure that they can acquire cooling vests for all the canine partners of California’s wildlife officers to protect them from the heat. This can allow those dogs to do their job more safely and effectively.
“If we can get cooling vests for the dogs, it may make a difference in mitigating a heat related injury during training or during a real life scenario where the dog is an absolute vital tool,” states Thomas. “I mean, if it were your loved one lost in the woods, wouldn’t you want to know the dog following their scent is able to work at maximum efficiency for as long as possible to locate them? Our canine partners are our family and they selflessly serve their communities alongside us.”
