-- British novelist D. B. Minter is developing the concluding volume of his opera-inspired literary trilogy, Redemption, extending a body of contemporary fiction that explores human identity, romantic relationships, psychological change and the influence of classical music. The forthcoming novel follows The Incidental Legacy of Carlo Negrini, published in 2024, and The Little Red Book, bringing together the author's longstanding interest in opera and his professional experience observing human relationships.
Minter, who spent 25 years working as a professional dating matchmaker in London, began publishing fiction in his seventies after decades of engagement with classical music and opera. His novels use musical and historical references as frameworks for examining the complexities of human behaviour, emotional vulnerability and the consequences of personal choices.

Trilogy Connects Classical Opera With Contemporary Fiction
The first novel, The Incidental Legacy of Carlo Negrini, draws inspiration from Giuseppe Verdi's 1857 opera Simon Boccanegra. Combining cultural and political themes with questions of personal identity, the book established the creative direction for the trilogy.
The second instalment, The Little Red Book, explores the relationship between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte through a contemporary narrative set within a gramophone society in Hertfordshire, England. The story follows Alex, a society member who writes modern interpretations inspired by Mozart's comic operas, creating a narrative in which fictional scenarios intersect with the lives of the characters.
Minter's approach examines how artistic expression can influence personal relationships and challenge established perceptions of identity.
“The characters all go on a journey that changes their lives for good or ill,” Minter said. “I would like readers to feel that human behaviour isn’t static and that we all have it in us to change.”
Upcoming Novel Explores Redemption and Historical Responsibility
The planned final volume, Redemption, draws on the creative partnership between composer Richard Strauss and librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal, with particular reference to their opera Arabella, which premiered in 1933.
Set against the historical backdrop of Europe's descent into the Nazi era, the novel examines themes of historical trauma, complicity, forgiveness and moral responsibility. Through its psychological and romantic elements, the book continues the trilogy's broader exploration of how individuals respond to difficult circumstances and whether their actions allow for personal transformation.
“Redemption does what it says on the tin, it’s all about forgiveness and redemption,” Minter said. “Some characters deserve redemption, others don't.”
The forthcoming title is intended to complete the trilogy's exploration of the relationship between art, personal identity and the capacity for change.
Author Draws on Decades of Musical and Personal Experience
Born in Hertfordshire, Minter now lives in Aldeburgh, on the Suffolk coast of England, with his wife, Deirdre. The couple met while he was living in Dublin in the 1970s. His background in matchmaking and his lifelong engagement with classical music inform his interest in the emotional dynamics and contradictions that shape human relationships.
Both The Incidental Legacy of Carlo Negrini and The Little Red Book are available internationally. Redemption is forthcoming, with publication details to be announced.
For readers interested in literary fiction, opera and psychological storytelling, Minter's trilogy offers a contemporary perspective on classical music's continuing relevance to questions of love, identity and human behaviour.D. B. Minter
