AirTulip revolutionizes bedroom air quality with aerospace-inspired laminar airflow and advanced filtration, delivering near-zero airborne pollutants. Handcrafted in the US and designed for wellness, its premium systems improve sleep and respiratory health, with expansion plans and clinical studies underway.

-- AirTulip, a New York-based startup, is bringing the science of cleanroom air purification to bedrooms across America, offering a transformative approach to how people breathe and sleep. Founded by aerospace engineer Arjen de Jong and business partner Raoul Valstar, AirTulip combines decades of scientific rigor with cutting-edge technology to redefine home air quality.

Aerospace Roots and Pandemic-Driven Innovation

Arjen de Jong’s journey began in the Netherlands, where his family’s cleanroom and aircraft equipment business introduced him to advanced airflow systems. After earning a doctorate in fluid mechanics, de Jong spent nearly 20 years applying aerodynamic principles at Porsche, Ferrari, and NASA Langley Research Center. In 2014, he launched Airdaptive in New York, focusing on airflow optimization.

The COVID-19 pandemic marked a pivotal shift. Initially engaged in ventilator design, de Jong recognized the urgent need for preventive air purification. Partnering with Valstar, he developed prototypes that evolved into AirTulip’s retail line. “We recognized the need for preventive air purification solutions,” said de Jong. “Our mission shifted from medical devices to home wellness.”

Cleanroom Science Meets Home Comfort

AirTulip’s core innovation is laminar airflow, long used in semiconductor and medical cleanrooms but now applied to residential spaces. Unlike conventional purifiers that mix filtered and unfiltered air, AirTulip’s system maintains separate layers at controlled velocities, preventing cross-contamination.

Independent testing at Eindhoven University of Technology confirmed the technology’s ability to reduce airborne particles to near-zero levels in targeted areas.

The flagship AirTulip Sleep system, integrated into a headboard, is priced between $1,990 and $3,490, depending on size. It features three operational modes (Whisper, Night, Day), advanced acoustics with noise levels as low as 26 dB(A), and dual industrial HEPA-H14, active carbon, and pre-filters that remove 99.997% of airborne pollutants, down to 0.12 microns. Each unit is handcrafted in Brooklyn and Detroit by a team of eight to 10 employees, reflecting a commitment to quality and sustainability.

Health Impact and Market Differentiation

Users with allergies and asthma report significant improvements. “I have stopped using any asthma medication since I got the board, that’s it,” shares A.K. A.F. notes, “Last night was the first night in about a week where my wife did not need her inhaler and did not wake up having to blow her nose. Thank you. It’s shocking.” Long-term allergy sufferers, like M.M., also report dramatic symptom reduction.

AirTulip’s approach aligns with World Health Organization guidelines for indoor air quality and the latest research on air pollution’s impact on sleep. The company is actively pursuing clinical studies to further validate these results.

AirTulip claims its technology delivers an air zone “1,000 times cleaner than using traditional purifiers,” thanks to laminar airflow control and filtration efficiency. The product’s integration with home decor appeals to design-conscious buyers, blending functionality with wellness.

Premium Positioning and Future Expansion

AirTulip’s systems are three to five times more expensive than typical desktop HEPA purifiers. The company offers a filter subscription service that provides a 15% discount, unlimited warranty, and free shipping. Annual subscriptions range from $286 to $572, depending on unit size.

Following its appearance on Shark Tank in April 2025, AirTulip is scaling production and expanding into Canada and Europe. Future plans include integrating wearable health monitors and data-driven air quality insights.
