-- Bel Marra Health (www.belmarrahealth.com), a company that offers high-quality, specially-formulated vitamins and nutritional products, is weighing in on new research that suggests weight loss can improve the liver health of obese people.

According to two new studies recently published in the journal Gastroenterology, weight loss through both lifestyle changes and bariatric surgery can significantly reduce features of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)—a disease characterized by fat in the liver. “NASH can lead to permanent liver damage and it is commonly seen in patients who are middle-aged and overweight or obese,” says Dr. Victor Marchione, spokesperson for Bel Marra Health. “Research shows that obese individuals who lose weight reduce the stress placed on the liver. The best part about this is that it doesn’t matter how these individuals go about losing the weight. It can be through surgery or lifestyle changes.”

In one study, Cuban researchers discovered that NASH was resolved in overweight and obese people who lost 10% or more of their weight after one year through lifestyle changes (diet and exercise.) In the second study, researchers from France discovered that NASH disappeared in approximately 85% of obese participants one year after they underwent weight-loss surgery. “Things such as adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet, not snacking on sugary foods, and getting more rest are steps anyone can take to improve their liver health,” concludes Dr. Marchione. “The Bel Marra Health website offers many helpful tips and guidelines on natural ways to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle.”
