Bel Marra Health (www.BelMarraHealth.com), a company that offers specially formulated vitamins and nutritional products, is weighing in on the unspoken risks of an underactive bladder. —
“It’s a condition that’s not discussed too frequently,” says Dr. Victor Marchione, spokesperson for Bel Marra Health. “Normally, the focus is given to an overactive bladder, which can be quite problematic as well. But there are many issues that go along with having an underactive bladder that also need attention.”
Indications of an underactive bladder are prolonged periods without the urge to urinate or feelings of incomplete urination. An underactive bladder can be a symptom of natural aging, but it can also be the result of other conditions, such as bladder outlet obstruction or diabetes mellitus. “Underactive bladder is becoming more and more of a problem for people these days,” Dr. Marchione continues. “It’s especially problematic for those between the ages of 40 and 60 because these people are typically the ones who are most affected by this condition.”
Currently, there is no cure available for an underactive bladder. However, there are ways to treat the condition and ease the intensity—medication and catheters are most effective. It’s also important to recognize the possible signs of an underactive bladder.
“We just don’t know enough about the condition to develop preventative medication or explore different ways of treating underactive bladder. It’s not like there is a ton of money going into the research, so really the resources are somewhat limited,” Dr. Marchione advises. “I suggest monitoring trips to the bathroom. That’s the best way to find out whether you are suffering from an underactive bladder.”
