Bel Marra Health comments on a research study that explores the effects of sugar on mental health.

-- Bel Marra Health (www.belmarrahealth.com), a company that offers high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional products, is commenting on research detailing the effects of sugar on mental health.

A study conducted by Columbia University measured the amount of sugar and carbohydrates in over 70,000 postmenopausal women. It was found that those who consumed foods with high glycemic index (GI) scores were more prone to depression, while those who ate a more healthy diet of vegetables, fiber and fruits had a lower risk of developing depression. “Sugar has long been linked to a lot of other negative diseases,” says Dr. Victor Marchione, spokesperson for Bel Marra Health. “High blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes are just a few of the illnesses that can be traced back to high sugar intake. But now this study is showing that sugar may even play a factor in mental illness, with a sample size that makes you have to pay attention.”

Dr. Marchione says this information means seniors must be proactive in taking steps to lower their risk of mental health issues. He says sugar intake is controllable, and some of the other actions are also fairly simple and go a long way to preventing depression.

“Diet, of course, is the first factor that stands out. Staying away from foods that contain high levels of sugar and eating a balanced diet is one proven way for seniors to improve their health. Being social and staying connected to people is another great way to avoid feeling depressed. Seniors who are isolated and not consistently interacting with friends and family have a higher risk of developing some kind of mental health issue.”

Staying active is something else Dr. Marchione encourages seniors to do. Taking walks or doing some light exercising has been proven to combat mental illness. Getting involved in activities that are mentally stimulating, such as board games, also helps keep the mind active and encourages positive mental health.

“Bel Marra Health understands the stigma around mental health and depression. This is why reporting on studies like these is important,” concludes Dr. Marchione. “Seniors suffering from mental health need to know they are not alone and that there are ways to prevent or treat the symptoms naturally. No one should feel embarrassed by any feelings of depression, and should in fact speak to someone they trust, like their family doctor, if these feelings start to linger.”
