Áwet New York, a black, refugee-founded lifestyle brand will honor IRC Ambassador Ebony Obsidian and donate 20% of December sales to support refugee communities. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, there are now more than 82 million refugees and displaced people around the world. —
Áwet New York, founded by Awet Woldegebrial launched during the pandemic to support New York’s garment workers but its Awet’s own experience as a refugee that helps drive the organization. He and his family lived between Eritrea and Ethiopia, before fleeing in 1998, stayed at a refugee camp in Kenya until 2000, when Áwet was granted asylum in the United States. Inspired by Áwet's father’s advice to “always lookout for people with greatness in their hands”, the brand aligned with International Rescue Committee’s (IRC) mission to help people affected by a humanitarian crisis to survive, recover, and rebuild their lives.
Áwet New York brand is elated to honor IRC Ambassador Ebony Obsidian’s work with the refugee community during the brands first annual “Night of Victory Celebration” taking place on December 14th in New York. Ebony is a celebrated actress seen across TV & movies including If Beale Street Could Talk, Sistas and Hunters among others. As an ambassador, Ebony’s family history enriches her understanding of what it is like to be displaced from your home and her efforts to advocate for refugees across the globe, helping families survive unthinkable circumstances. This collective effort will create more change, awareness and directly improve the lives of many.
“The International Rescue Committee is honored to have Ebony Obsidian as an ambassador joining us in raising awareness with the public on the value that refugees bring to our lives and neighborhoods.”
