The inspirational mother of two opens up about why she’s leading the way for other women to reclaim their self-belief– in ‘Change Makers, Volume 6’.

From the outside looking in, she had it all: a loving husband, two beautiful children and a successful career. But like many other women, Jess Mayne found herself asking the question: ‘Is there more?’

Admitting that we desire more from life can be confronting. It can even be paralysing. Jess Mayne understands this better than most.

“I did what was to be expected because I thought it was the right thing to do. It was a huge struggle for me even to allow myself to question ‘what if?’ ” said Mayne.

Jess Mayne began her working life as a teacher, aspiring one day to be a principal. A natural leader, nothing made her prouder than seeing the progress her students had made.

“Teaching was fulfilling, but I had a burning feeling that there had to be more; and that I could be more,” said Mayne.

“I tried to push back this feeling. It made me uncomfortable. So, I kept going, living my ‘good on paper’ life, and ignoring my inner voice. It was exhausting,” she added.

When Mayne became a mother for the first time, she felt she was at a crossroads. Wanting to spend as much quality time as she could with her baby daughter, she agonized over her decision to step back from teaching given the financial independence she would lose. She was thrown into a state of overwhelm and unhappiness, and found herself lacking in self-belief, a feeling undoubtedly familiar to new mums worldwide.

Mayne finally decided to lean into what she truly desired, and after a great deal of soul-searching, found the courage to take a new path in life, embracing a career in Social Marketing. She describes the paralysing fear she experienced in her story, which was recently published in Change Makers: 25 Transformational Stories From Women Making An Impact In The Lives Of Others.

The book includes chapters written by women, including health experts, artists, healers and entrepreneurs from across the world, who share their transformative journeys to serve others, create meaningful businesses, and enrich lives. Released in September 2021, the international bestseller has topped Amazon charts in Australia, the USA and Canada.

Mayne was selected to share her story by Emma Hamlin, the book’s publisher and founder of Change Maker Press. Hamlin is herself a bestselling author, publisher, and strategic marketing expert who founded her company to provide a space for innovative and inspiring women to be seen and heard.

“Right now, I know my life would be very different if I didn’t take one scared step with courage and an open heart to venture into Social Retail,” said Mayne.

“My children would be getting raised by other people while I worked full time. I would be stressed, tired and underappreciated. I would long for the weekend. I would have missed so many precious, ordinary everyday moments with my daughters,” she added.

Mayne says she’s proud of her accomplishments and was delighted to share her story in the hope of inspiring other everyday women to follow their desire for ‘more’.

“It’s so interesting to look back and reflect on my journey because, at one point in my life, I didn’t believe an achievement like this was possible. Now I’m living proof that as women, we can live a life of freedom and purpose. I’m here to encourage other women and show them that anything is possible!”

She hopes that by leading by example, other everyday women will be inspired to stop ‘playing small’ in their own lives.

“I’m here to stop women telling themselves that they ‘can’t’ and start believing that they can do hard things.” said Mayne.

“Do them messy. Do them uncomfortable. Do them scared. We are meant to live an incredible life!”
