— Armstrong Air & Heating is proud to announce their sponsorship of the first annual Hooked for a Cure Charity Redfish Tournament and Airboat Poker Run. The tournament and poker run will be an annual event, with a new family affected by cancer chosen as the beneficiary every year. The goal is to bring the community together with fishing and fun every year, to help a family in need. A silent auction was also included as part of the fundraising efforts.
The 2015 beneficiary is Mike Woods. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma cancer three years ago. After undergoing a stem cell transplant and using chemo medication ever since, his cancer went into remission for a year. It has returned with a vengeance, now requiring IV chemotherapy two to three times a week, and a bone hardener treatment once a month. The funds raised from this event will go directly to Mike Woods and his family to help ease the financial burden. In November 2014, Mr. Woods had two brain surgeries over the span of a week to alleviate pressure on the brain caused by chemo.
The Redfish tournament took place on January 17th, and the airboat “poker run” took place the following day. 45 boats entered the tournament, though only 22 boats weighed in. The first place boat, Team Wood/Poza, brought in 13.64 pounds of fish securing the $1,250 prize. Hunter Schuseneyer won the $500 poker prize for best hand, with four of a kind.
President Paul Richards says, “Here at Armstrong, we believe in giving back to the community whenever and wherever possible. We were honored to sponsor such an incredible event, and plan to continue being a sponsor for Hooked for a Cure for years to come. We wish Mr. Woods and his family well, and hope the event was able to ease some of the financial burden so that he may truly focus on recovery. We can’t wait to help another family next year.”
Mr. Woods received another stem cell treatment February 28th, and continues to work toward remission. The final amount of funds the family received through this event was not disclosed. Details for the 2016 event and beneficiary have not yet been announced, as they are currently in the planning stages.
