Aporia, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) control platform, is proud to announce that its groundbreaking Guardrails have been named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2024 in the AI category. This prestigious recognition highlights Aporia's significant contributions to advancing AI safety and reliability in generative AI applications.

Every year, TIME honors 200 innovations that are changing the world—making it better, smarter, and even a bit more fun. Past honorees have included revolutionary technologies like OpenAI's GPT-4 and LEGO Braille Bricks. This year, Aporia's Guardrails stands alongside other trailblazing inventions, recognized for its real-time risk mitigation capabilities in AI systems.

In March of 2024, Aporia's co-founders identified a challenge: as companies began integrating AI models like OpenAI's into their chatbots and applications, they faced numerous issues. Problems such as hallucinations, privacy concerns, prompt injection attacks, unintended disclosures, toxicity, and more were causing significant setbacks. These issues led to viral stories of chatbots making promises they shouldn't, eroding trust in brands and AI technology alike, and even posing legal risks.

To address these challenges, Aporia developed a multiSLM Detection Engine that powers AI Guardrails, a solution designed to make AI safe and reliable. Acting as a guardian between the user and the AI, the Guardrails vet every message and response according to customizable safety policies. Should a policy be violated, it takes immediate action in real-time by overriding or rephrasing messages before any potential damage occurs. Thanks to the multiSLM Detection Engine, Aporia’s Guardrails work at an average of 0.34-seconds latency and with an F1 score of 0.95.

As generative AI applications grow, the need for strong safety measures has become non-negotiable. Aporia's Guardrails technology solves this need by providing real-time monitoring and intervention capabilities for AI systems. Now a TIME Best Invention for 2024, Aporia’s Guardrails have been recognized as a critical invention that will revolutionize the AI industry.

TIME conducts a thorough selection process for the Best Inventions list, involving careful evaluation by global editors and correspondents. It assesses inventions based on newness, effectiveness, ambition, and impact. Aporia's inclusion in this prestigious list shows the importance of its contribution to AI safety.

“We’re incredibly proud to see Aporia’s Guardrails recognized by TIME as one of the year’s best inventions,” said Liran Hason, chief executive officer (CEO) of Aporia.

“Aporia is committed to making AI applications safer and more reliable for everyone—from businesses to everyday consumers. We’re developing rigorous Guardrail policies, implementing advanced capabilities to ensure compliance with AI regulations in the EU and US, expanding capabilities to secure a broader range of AI systems, and welcoming new customers. Our Guardrails do more than manage glitches; they empower companies to deploy AI that users can trust.”

Of the new list, TIME’s editors write: “The result is a list of 200 groundbreaking inventions (and 50 special mention inventions)—including the world’s largest computer chip, a humanoid robot joining the workforce, and a bioluminescent houseplant—that are changing how we live, work, play, and think about what’s possible.”

This recognition from TIME adds to Aporia's growing list of honors. The company was previously named a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum in 2023, further cementing its position as a leader in the AI safety space.

Aporia has also partnered with major technology companies, and leading organizations across various industries have adopted its technology. The company's client roster includes prominent names such as Bosch, Lemonade, Munich Reinsurance Company (RE), Course Hero, and Sixt.

Recently, Aporia announced a significant partnership with Google Cloud, making its multiSLM Guardrails technology available on the Google Cloud Marketplace. AI teams can easily incorporate Guardrails into their generative AI applications through its availability in Google Cloud.

In the next few months, you’ll see Aporia’s continued commitment to making AI applications safer and more trustworthy for everyone—from businesses to everyday consumers. This includes new Guardrail policies, additional dashboard features, new capabilities for securing additional types of AI as well as some new customers.
