The Northern California apparel shop gives 25% of proceeds from every order to non-profit animal shelters and rescue organizations.

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, and Animal Hearted Apparel is featuring its Rescue collection all month. The collection has 62 shirts, hoodies, mugs, and other items with adoption messages, from the “Adopt Don’t Shop” hoodie to the “Who Rescued Who” T-shirt. Animal Hearted donates 25% of proceeds from every order to non-profit animal shelters and rescue organizations.

American Humane started the October adoption campaign in 1981 to encourage families to adopt from a local shelter or rescue. The need is still large. According to the ASPCA, 2.8 million dogs entered U.S. shelters and rescues in 2025, and about 2 million dogs were adopted. The ASPCA also reports that dogs, especially large dogs, are waiting longer in shelters before they find homes.

“Both of our dogs are rescues,” said Aaron Seminoff, founder of Animal Hearted Apparel. “Roxy is 13. Django is 2 and started out as a feral dog that we caught. When someone buys a shirt that says Adopt Don’t Shop, a quarter of that order goes to a shelter or rescue. I want the shirt to help the animals it talks about.”

Organizations Animal Hearted has worked with include the Humane Society of the United States, Animal Place Sanctuary, Give Me Shelter Cat Rescue, the North Shore Animal League, SPCA of Solano County, Mid Atlantic Pug Rescue, Yolo County SPCA, and German Shepherd Rescue of Northern California.

Two of those groups focus on a single breed. Many breeds have their own rescue groups, so a person who wants a specific breed does not have to start with a breeder. Buying from a breeder is a large expense. A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy from a health-tested breeder costs $1,800 to $3,500 up front, according to The Pet Zone. The collection’s “My Favorite Breed Is Rescued” shirt makes the same point.

The Rescue collection includes 35 T-shirts, 10 tank tops, 6 hoodies, 3 sweatshirts, 4 mugs, and 4 magnets. T-shirts start at $24.95.
