The lack of regulation and control in the non-surgical treatments sector has been in the news repeatedly over the last few years, with numerous reports highlighting the need for better control of the practitioners carrying out treatment. —
Prospective patients are advised to choose a provider carefully. Trained GP Dr John Quinn MB, BCH, BAO, mBCAM founded Quinn Clinics based in London and Bristol, where he personally carries out all anti-ageing injections. He explains what clients should look for:
“Firstly, bear in mind that non-surgical treatments are medical procedures and it is important to choose very carefully. The lack of regulation in the sector unfortunately means that you can’t assume a level of quality, so you need to satisfy yourself before you let anybody approach your face with a needle.”
“The most popular brand of anti-wrinkle injections must be prescribed by a qualified professional (e.g. doctor, dentist, prescribing nurse) and under GMC regulations, prescribing doctors must meet the patient face to face first. If this isn’t happening, then choose another provider as the law and the industry is clear on the prescribing requirements.”
“The actual injections themselves can be carried out by anybody without qualifications or training, which is something which surprises us professionals just as much as it surprises our patients. Therefore it is sensible to understand who will be carrying out any work. Qualifications are not a legal requirement, but a good practitioner should have some evidence that they have had formal teaching in carrying out injections. However, bear in mind that carrying out non-surgical treatments also involves artistic skill which isn’t taught at medical school; so also look for evidence of a practitioner’s practical experience of working in the field.”
Dr John Quinn himself demonstrates an ongoing commitment to both qualifications and experience. He has worked in the aesthetics business since 2005 and opened his first clinic in 2006. His medical qualification has been enhanced with further postgraduate study, including a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Dermatology and a Dermoscopy course at the University of Cardiff plus a qualification in lasers and light based treatments.
Dr Quinn attends numerous international conferences in order to stay at the forefront of the industry, most recently the American Academy of Dermatology 2016. In 2015, he attended numerous industry gatherings to teach and demonstrate his own techniques for the latest injectable non-surgical treatments.
Dr John Quinn says:
“In an industry which is often criticised for lack of regulation, I would like to reassure customers that there are many Aesthetic Doctors in the UK, who are medically qualified with additional training and qualifications as well as many years’ experience. I am privileged to work with some excellent professionals.”
“My message to anybody contemplating having treatment is to check your practitioner’s background and if in doubt, go elsewhere.”
Quinn Clinics offers an extensive range of cosmetic and medical skin treatments at their London clinic in Blackheath/Greenwich as well as their original clinic based in Clifton, Bristol.
The clinics are equipped with the latest advanced skin treatment technology, including IPL, laser, CO2 and Pelleve radio frequency to suit a wide variety of needs and requirements. In 2014, they launched the eTwo system, which offers SublimeTM and SublativeTM treatments which can tighten the skin and reduce wrinkles and pigmentation. In the last year, the clinic has added Ulthera to it’s menu of treatments. A genuine alternative to surgery, Ulthera is primarily used to lift and tighten under the chin and the jowl area.
Quinn Clinics was established in 2006 in Bristol by founder Dr John Quinn. In 2013, a second clinic opened in Greenwich (Blackheath, London). Both clinics are registered with the CQC (Care Quality Commission), meeting very high clinical standards throughout.
