Advanced Security Devices Can Safeguard Your Vehicle From Key Hacking and Theft

Keyless car theft is rising across the UK, and experts recommend fitting a discreet immobiliser to block cloned-key attacks and significantly strengthen vehicle security

-- Keyless car thefts and break-ins have become prevalent across almost every region of the UK. The most recent government data shows that over 114,000 vehicles are stolen each year, and thefts often occur without criminals needing access to your keys.

Modern cars are almost exclusively produced with keyless entry fobs, which makes it easy for organised gangs to clone keys. Most use devices that intercept the signal between your fob and the vehicle, or bypass in-built security altogether – increasing the crucial need for more advanced security measures.

Eydens Auto Locksmiths, specialists in vehicle security with over 20 years of experience, advise that a leading-edge Ghost immobiliser is one of the best solutions for protecting vehicles and vans from criminal damage, break-ins, and theft.

Drivers Behind the Development of More Advanced Car Security Measures

Over the years, we've seen pronounced changes to the features and technology incorporated into newly manufactured cars and vans.

For the most part, these functions are designed for convenience and reliability. Still, keyless entry systems have also changed the way criminals steal cars – often to order – or target vans where there is a good chance of stealing valuable tools and equipment.

The difficulty is that thieves don't necessarily need to get their hands on your keys to steal your vehicle. Although bag snatches and key thefts still happen, these types of targeted thefts have become secondary to key cloning.

Relay attacks involve criminals using a receiver and transmitter to intercept the signal between your fob and the car when you lock or unlock your vehicle, or copying and boosting it when your car is parked outside and your keys are inside your home.

There are a few ways to prevent this, including using pouches that block signal interference, but in reality, the best option is to invest in a proactive, dependable security immobiliser that is immune to all kinds of tampering attempts.

What Is a Ghost Immobiliser, and How Can This Device Protect Against Vehicle Crime?

Ghost immobilisers are so-called because, unlike conventional devices like clunky steering wheel locks, which can be cumbersome, heavy and awkward to manoeuvre, the immobiliser is discreetly fitted inside the car without any wiring or cables to contend with.

Because a Ghost immobiliser is undetectable and lacks a physical device that can be damaged or removed, it cannot be located and is integrated into the car's electronics.

Here at Eydens, we supply and fit the Autowatch Ghost II model as certified installers, ensuring there is no visible wiring that a criminal could cut or disable to circumvent the immobiliser. As an aside, it’s always advisable to have your immobiliser professionally installed for the assurance that it’s working correctly.

This electronic, intelligent device connects with the electronic control unit (ECU) in your vehicle, which is activated by your fob to unlock the doors and start the engine. The contrast is that the Ghost II also requires you to enter a unique pin, or sequence, without which the car cannot be started, regardless of whether a thief has forced entry.

For drivers with high-end vehicles, business vans or cars perceived as easy to steal or sell, this can make a substantial difference, because every immobiliser is programmed to respond to a sequence or code that you pick – and no two are the same.

Criminals cannot guess a random sequence, but you, as the owner, can decide what this should be, selecting from 4 to 21 different actions, button presses, or numbers that must be entered in the right order for the engine to start.

How Does a Ghost II Immobiliser Improve Manufacturer-Standard Security?

We speak with hundreds of drivers every month, and many have been lulled into a false sense of security because their car comes with safety features. These can be effective but vary between manufacturers and, in most cases, are identical across all models within the same range or production cycle.

Installing an immobiliser immediately enhances your security and reduces the risk of theft by incorporating additional safety measures. For example, if a window or door were forced and someone without your sequence tried to drive away, your immobiliser can be programmed to shut down the fuel system and the starter motor, making it physically impossible for the car to be moved.

Additionally, depending on the model of the car or van you drive, you can request other features, such as an automatic alarm activation to draw attention to a suspected theft attempt.

What Happens if I Have a Ghost Immobiliser Fitted and Need My Car to Be Serviced or Valeted?

This is a great question, and one that's common among drivers who want to protect their vehicles and belongings from thieves but also realise that a unique security code isn't something they'd feel comfortable sharing with a service centre or valet!

There are two deactivation modes you can choose from: Valet/Service mode and Transport mode. The former allows the vehicle to be driven without the access code, although within limitations. You can drive your vehicle to the garage or forecourt, park, and activate Valet/Service mode, which will enable it to be driven up to a maximum speed limit before the immobiliser is reactivated.

Transport mode allows another authorised driver to operate your vehicle, but you must enter your code to be able to put the immobiliser into this setting. When your car has been valeted or serviced, you simply re-enter the PIN or sequence to reactivate the ghost immobiliser until you choose to deactivate it again.
