Admission Crew, LLC has introduced an educational initiative for parents of middle school students in the Bay Area, led by college adviser Archana Sudame. Rather than traditional college admissions advising, it helps families understand academic decisions made years before applications that shape students’ college outcomes.

-- Admission Crew, LLC has announced an educational initiative for Bay Area parents of children in or entering middle school, a departure from the traditional college admissions advising that typically begins in high school. Led by independent college adviser Archana Sudame, the initiative helps families understand the academic decisions made before ninth grade that influence both college admission and degree completion. Admission Crew will partner with non-profit organizations such as the Rotary Club of San Ramon Valley to raise awareness through mini half-day conferences.

This initiative is a departure from the work Sudame generally undertakes. Her practice has traditionally focused on guiding high school students through the college admissions process. Recently, however, more families have expressed concern about how little they understand the transition from middle school to high school and how decisions made during those years can affect students later in high school. To address this need, Sudame has created a series of learning conferences called Step Up. These conferences are designed to help families make informed academic and educational decisions before important opportunities are unintentionally lost.

Rising college costs are only part of the challenge the initiative addresses. Public four-year tuition and fees for in-state students rose from about $9,140 to $11,610 between 2014 and 2024, roughly a 27 percent increase, and private nonprofit four-year tuition now averages about $51,200 a year. At the same time, finishing is far from guaranteed. The national six-year completion rate for students who entered college in fall 2019 was 61.1 percent, meaning roughly 4 in 10 students did not complete a four-year college degree within six years.

Financial investment is only one part of the equation. Students who do not understand academic expectations, course sequencing, and the timing of key skill development, or who do not take the initiative to pursue opportunities available to them in middle and high school, can later find themselves shut out of advanced coursework, competitive college programs, internships, clubs, and other opportunities they might otherwise have pursued.

Sudame, who holds a doctorate in a STEM field, frames the initiative around that combination of rising cost and uncertain completion.

"It's not about getting into a college. It's also finishing college in four years because college has become so expensive now," said Sudame, an independent college adviser.

As Sudame describes it, independent educational consultants, or IECs, have long told families to wait until a student is a rising ninth grader, yet the decisions that most affect a student's options, such as course placement and math sequencing, are often made well before then. She has spent more than 17 years advising families, and her approach centers on academic foundations rather than application tactics.

Through Admission Crew, LLC, she plans to offer affordable group sessions for Bay Area families, with particular attention to immigrant and first-generation households that may be less familiar with the U.S. system. The sessions are intended to explain course selection, math sequencing, and the early choices that influence whether a student is prepared for college-level work.

Sudame is careful to distinguish the work from early coaching. The intent, she says, is to help families make informed decisions at the right moments, not to tailor or pressure children years in advance, and to replace the hearsay many families rely on with clear information.

The initiative reflects the view that the decisions with the greatest impact on a student's options are made years before any application, and that clearer guidance at that stage can reduce both wasted time and wasted tuition.
