Patch Clamp Amplifier—containing the circuitry necessary to measure the magnitude and direction of the current flowing through the cell membrane. The pipette tip forms a gigaohm seal with the film, providing an index related to the conductance of the film through which the current flows.

Digitizer—A data acquisition instrument that converts analog signals into digital signals. In order to perform the data analysis required for high-resolution patch-clamp measurements, analog signals must be converted to digital signals.

Analysis Sofware—The interface between amplifiers, digitizers, and any other patch clamp electronics, used to perform data acquisition and data analysis and to control digitizers and amplifiers.

Headstage—A device that uses a built-in circuit to fix the micropipette can transmit electrical signals from the micropipette to the amplifier.

Microscope—An important optical magnification tool. The micromanipulator is a device that mechanically manipulates a micropipette with nanometer precision, and can usually perform 3D movement. A microscope with a micromanipulator can accurately and stably position the micropipette to the cell membrane area. It is required for successful recording. An inverted microscope is preferred because it allows easier access from the electrode above the preparation, and also provides a larger, more robust platform to bolt the micromanipulator.

Faraday Cage and Tables—The Faraday cage is a wire mesh enclosure that surrounds the microscope and recording room, which prevents the electrodes from picking up unwanted noise sources. An air or anti-vibration table is used to isolate the device from external sources of vibration that may disrupt this alignment.
