4Patriots Official Provides Food Storage Advice

The U.S. wastes $160 billion in food each year. Food storage mistakes account for a significant portion of that waste. 4Patriots offers survival food good for 25 years.

Most of us have good intentions when we store leftover food for another day. But often the mistakes we make when storing it end up making that food inedible.

According to a recent article from KPRC-TV in Houston, Texas, storing food the right way saves money while cutting down on waste.

The article states that 20 percent of purchased food is not consumed, costing the average household about $2,200 in food waste annually. The main culprits when it comes to food spoilage are oxygen, moisture, light, microbial growth and temperature.

“Food waste has become a serious problem in this country,” said Allen Baler, Partner at 4Patriots LLC. Baler’s company provides a variety of products to help people become more self-reliant and independent, including 4Patriots Survival Food.

“Statistics show that the U.S. wastes more than $160 billion in food each year. And the U.S. Department of Agriculture states that dairy products account for the largest share of that waste.”

Nearly every 4Patriots Survival Food item – for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks – is good for 25 years, so it’s not necessary to periodically rotate stockpiles. All 4Patriots Survival Food items are non-GMO, mostly sourced from the “fresh produce” category and packed in the U.S.

The food is dehydrated at its peak of freshness, using a patented $450,000 machine. The 72-hour, one-week, four-week, three-month and one-year emergency food kits from 4Patriots are good tasting and nutritious.

The food in 4Patriots Survival Food kits can be prepared in less than 20 minutes and requires only boiling water. It’s contained in easy-to-store, space-age Mylar pouches, which keep out air, moisture and light. They are tucked inside tough, stackable totes that are discreet and store anywhere, including the basement, attic, garage, cabin or even an RV.

“With 4Patriots Survival Food, there’s no need to worry about food waste,” Baler added. “And once someone has acquired that food, they gain the peace of mind that comes from knowing they’re prepared for the next emergency that comes along.”

Below are 10 common food storage mistakes:

Ignoring the importance of nutrition in the foods that are stored. Sometimes people are so concerned about the volume of food they store that they forget about vitamin and mineral content.

Using sacks or other containers that are not airtight. Air and moisture will greatly decrease the shelf life of stored food. Only use durable containers that keep out air and moisture.

Failing to keep food containers in a cool, dry place. Basements are generally much better than garages for storing your containers because there are fewer temperature changes.

Failing to keep food containers out of the light. Light can deplete the vitamin content of food. Make sure sunlight cannot reach your containers.

Storing too many items that need refrigeration. Because a crisis is likely to include the loss of power, make sure no more than 10 percent of your stockpile requires refrigeration.

Failing to include enough of a variety of different foods. After a couple of days of eating the exact same thing, people want some variety.

Failing to maintain a good balance in the foods that are stored. Make sure that the various food items provide a variety of different vitamins and minerals.

Failing to include at least a small percentage of “comfort” foods. In addition to satisfying a sweet tooth, comfort foods will be a big help psychologically for individuals and families in a crisis.

Failing to check expiration dates and rotate stored foods. In each container, organize food by expiration date. When an item’s expiration date is approaching, eat that food or donate it to a shelter.

Storing all of the food in only one location. If a home is destroyed in a disaster, residents will be glad that they kept food and water at a secondary location.

4Patriots Survival Food provides emergency food products that are shelf-stable for 25 years. 4Patriots Survival Food kits are made with food grown, harvested and packaged in the United States, and all of the meals are made without any genetically-modified products, preservatives or fillers.
