YourSalaryTax translates gross salaries into estimated take-home pay across 22 countries as OECD data shows the average tax wedge for a single worker earning the average wage reached 35.1% of labour costs in 2025.

-- UNITED STATES – September 23, 2026 – YourSalaryTax, an international salary calculator, is helping workers understand how gross salaries translate into take-home pay across 22 countries as labour taxes vary between economies.

According to the OECD’s Taxing Wages 2026 report, the average tax wedge for a single worker without children earning the average wage rose by 0.15 percentage points to 35.1% in 2025. The measure reflects personal income tax and employee and employer social security contributions, less applicable cash benefits, as a share of total labour costs.

The OECD reported that the tax wedge increased in 24 of 38 member countries, declined in 11 and remained unchanged in three. Belgium recorded the highest level at 52.5%, while Colombia recorded the lowest at 0%. For a one-earner married couple with two children, the OECD average was lower at 26.2%.

“When more than a third of labour costs disappears before payday in the average advanced economy, workers deserve to see exactly where it goes,” said Orhan Oğuz of YourSalaryTax. “A single percentage hides income tax, social security and pension contributions that behave differently in every country. Our aim is to replace guesswork with a calculation drawn from each nation’s own tax authority.”

Different Systems, Different Take-Home Pay

The OECD figures show how location can affect the relationship between salary and take-home pay. Annual movements also differed sharply: the single-worker tax wedge rose by 2.45 percentage points in the United Kingdom and 1.95 points in Estonia, while declining by 1.67 points in Australia.

“Tax thresholds and contribution rates change almost every year, and a stale figure quietly misleads people,” Oğuz added. “The platform refreshes its calculations against each country’s official bands as they are updated, so users compare current net pay rather than last year’s.”

YourSalaryTax Net Pay Calculation Method

YourSalaryTax uses published tax rules from national authorities to estimate deductions for each supported country. The platform references authorities including HMRC in the United Kingdom, the IRS in the United States and Germany’s federal finance authorities. Calculations can account for components such as income tax, social security or National Insurance and applicable pension contributions.

Alongside country calculators, YourSalaryTax provides comparison tools and profession-based salary information, helping users examine how gross pay may translate into estimated net income across different locations.
