-- Herbert L. Drayton III is the CEO and president of Vertical Holdings Inc., a firm that works with companies to elevate their productivity and maximize their revenue potential. He was asked to speak by the College at their Center for Entrepreneurship in order to relate his own story of building a business and answer questions.
“This is my second time speaking at the College,” says Drayton. “I enjoy being able to tell my story to others who want to go into business someday. I feel it’s my job to mentor and encourage the next generation of business owners.”
Most economists believe that it is the small businesses and small business owners that set the pace for a nation’s economy. Healthy entrepreneurship has the potential to raise local standards of living by increasing the potential for jobs and raising consumer spending.
As a successful business owner with over 10,000 clients across the US, Drayton is routinely asked to speak about what it takes to be successful in business. His company’s business model is helping others to develop their in-house skills and improve their processes so that they have a much larger profit margin. Vertical Holdings works across a variety of industries, from medical to B2C to SaaS, and one thing that he believes is key to success is finding the right people for the job. The right people, he believes, are those that come with a passion and a story. “I speak in a lot of places and what I iterate each time is the need to find that person who wants that job and can bring a wealth of personal and work-related experience with them,” says Drayton. “The other week I spoke at a local AITP meeting where I discussed minority hiring, and I like to do things like that because I can provide examples of how a company or business can become infused with new energy by finding people who have unique vision.”
He insists that so much of small business ownership is passion coupled with discipline, and wants to deliver his knowledge and message to those people with a drive to make their dreams happen. His speech at the College of Charleston Center for Entrepreneurship will not only bring out that knowledge of working within laws and opportunities that currently exist, but how to manage the natural pitfalls and setbacks. It is his hope that he will energize the current classes and help them along the path of their dreams.
