Urban Learning launches as a game based security training platform featuring interactive exercises, scenario based questions, and knowledge assessments.

-- Urban Learning, a game-based security training platform developed by Denver-based Urban Security & Protection Group (USPG), has been launched. It consists of interactive exercises, scenario-based questions, assessments, and knowledge challenges for security officer education.

According to Terri Carrigan-McMillan, co-owner of USPG, the platform builds on USPG’s established security training program in Colorado. Urban Learning incorporates interactive activities into professional education, allowing participants to engage with training material and consider how it applies to their responsibilities.

The training covers topics relevant to security officers’ professional duties, including de-escalation, conflict resolution, communication, situational awareness, use-of-force principles, interactions with law enforcement, and regulatory requirements. Its format combines instructional content with exercises that present situations officers may encounter in their work.

Carrigan-McMillan notes that the platform reflects the role of education in developing professional judgment and awareness. “Training is an opportunity to help people develop the judgment behind their actions. When security officers understand the reasoning behind a procedure, they can approach their responsibilities with greater awareness of the people, circumstances, and consequences involved,” Carrigan-McMillan states.

Scenario-based activities form part of Urban Learning’s approach to addressing practical aspects of security work. Officers may encounter a range of situations in commercial properties, residential communities, public venues, and other settings. Their responsibilities can include communicating with members of the public, recognizing developing concerns, and responding in accordance with established procedures and applicable requirements.

The platform currently offers online initial and renewal security training in English and Spanish. USPG is considering opportunities to make Urban Learning available to additional security companies in Colorado and potentially other states.

Carrigan-McMillan notes that the company’s experience in security operations has informed the development of its training materials. “Every learning experience carries an opportunity to shape how someone approaches their work. In security, that includes understanding the responsibility that comes with being entrusted with another person’s safety, property, or sense of security,” she says. “Education can provide a setting for people to consider these responsibilities and reflect on how their decisions affect others.”

Availability in additional markets will involve consideration of the training and licensing requirements applicable in each jurisdiction. Security officer education is subject to state and local regulations, which may affect how training materials are adapted for different locations.

Future development may involve revisions to existing educational content, additional interactive modules, and discussions with other security organizations about potential use of the platform. Any expansion will require consideration of the relevant requirements for security officer training in each market.

For Carrigan-McMillan and co-owner Jeffrey McMillan, the platform addresses the range of responsibilities security officers carry out in their daily work. Officers may interact with visitors, employees, residents, and event attendees, with duties that can involve communication, observation, and following established procedures.

“Professionalism is demonstrated through the decisions people make throughout their working day,” Carrigan-McMillan remarks. “Education can help individuals reflect on those decisions, recognize the responsibilities attached to their roles, and consider how their conduct affects the people they serve.”

With its launch, Urban Learning introduces a game-based format into USPG’s security training activities. Its further development will depend on educational requirements, applicable regulations, and opportunities to extend the platform’s availability to other security companies.
