Tweedy Risk Information Consulting Returns to Market as AI Reshapes Insurance Technology

-- Tweedy Risk Information Consulting has returned to the market after a two-year hiatus, reopening its independent risk technology advisory practice as artificial intelligence attracts growing attention across the insurance industry. Relaunched on Labor Day, the company is renewing its consulting services and independent publishing work to help organizations evaluate risk management information systems and assess the capabilities of emerging technologies.

As insurance and risk platforms increasingly incorporate AI, President David Tweedy believes organizations need experienced, independent judgment to assess what vendors are actually delivering. He has spent nearly five decades working with risk technology, beginning with paper claim files in 1977 and conducting his first independent systems review in 1985. His experience spans the evolution from mainframe-based systems to today’s AI-enabled platforms.

“Everybody talks about AI, and you have to talk about it, or people will think you’re behind the curve,” Tweedy explains. “But I don’t really see too much delivery.” He compares the current enthusiasm to the early days of the World Wide Web, when widespread discussion preceded meaningful implementation by several years. He believes the insurance industry may need time before AI produces substantial changes to the systems organizations rely on.

Tweedy Risk Information Consulting helps risk managers and software buyers evaluate systems used to manage workers’ compensation, general liability, automobile liability, and property exposures. Tweedy develops procurement specifications, identifies vendors that may meet an organization’s requirements, and can oversee implementation after a purchasing decision. He also assists organizations dealing with vendor problems and provides expert witness services and industry research for investors assessing software companies.

The practice is also reopening its claims auditing services, drawing on Tweedy’s earlier experience as a supervisor at a global insurance company and his work conducting claims audits for major corporations. He now uses technology-enabled solutions to analyze claims data, providing an updated approach to work he previously carried out through manual file reviews.

His consulting work has included a public sector risk pool whose outdated system was creating difficulties for adjusters and underwriters, delaying reports, and disrupting operations. Tweedy helped assess the existing system, identify shortcomings, and prepare the organization to seek a replacement. The implementation of a new RMIS followed, and he reports that the organization is now operating more effectively.

In another engagement involving a large California county, Tweedy helped the organization adopt a new system that streamlined its processes. The change reduced a workflow that had required approximately 50 steps to just three, according to Tweedy. He also helped a major theme park evaluate its existing technology and identify a more suitable replacement.

Such projects reflect his view that organizations often struggle to evaluate software because they lack the specialist knowledge needed to challenge vendors’ proposals or identify the requirements that matter most. An independent review can help buyers establish what their operations need before committing to a system and assess whether a proposed solution addresses those requirements.

Tweedy’s independence is rooted in his professional history. He said he has never worked for a company that sells software, allowing him to approach purchasing decisions without the commercial interests that can influence vendor recommendations. Over the years, he has watched providers enter and leave the market while continuing to follow developments in risk management technology.

“I’ve seen the changes. I’ve seen vendors come and go, and I have kept my eye on this marketplace,” Tweedy says. “So it’s experience and perspective that I bring to the table.”

His return also includes a renewed focus on publishing. Tweedy has documented the evolution of risk management information systems in his article From Mainframes to AI, drawing on decades of industry experience. He is also reconnecting with major software vendors to assess their latest offerings directly, comparing their capabilities with the claims made in their marketing materials.

When it comes to evaluating current AI capabilities, Tweedy intends to examine what vendors can demonstrate in practice as organizations consider how emerging tools may affect their existing systems and future purchasing decisions.

For risk leaders weighing technology investments, Tweedy’s renewed practice offers access to an adviser who has followed the market since its early stages. He encourages organizations to approach him with questions about their current systems, available alternatives, or the likely implications of AI for their operations.

“I’m approachable. I’d like to talk with them if they have any questions about their current system or what’s new out there right now,” he says. “How really is AI going to impact my system? That’s basically what I want them to work on.”

With Tweedy Risk Information Consulting back in operation, Tweedy is positioning his experience in independent systems evaluation to help organizations make informed technology decisions as the insurance software market continues to evolve.
