Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues have gained global attention. To deepen students’ understanding of ESG, Towngas has collaborated with the School of Communication at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) to launch their first ESG Scholarship Programme. The initiative awarded five teams, comprising 17 students in total, with scholarships of HK$10,000 per team. Through this programme, Towngas aims to encourage students to familiarise themselves with ESG concepts and continue to focus on these issues in their future careers in journalism and communication.
The inaugural scholarship programme featured two categories: print and audio-visual/multi-media. Participating teams were required to submit a news report on an ESG-related topic. The submissions covered a wide range of subjects within the ESG spectrum, including plastic reduction policies, old industrial area revitalisation, green burial, agricultural land rehabilitation, bee conservation, food waste, and green transportation, demonstrating the students’ keen news sense.
Yiu Siu-ho, a member of the “Three Little Bees” team, which received a scholarship, shared that the programme deepened his understanding of ESG. “Through the process of research, interviews, and writing, we learned how crucial even a small bee is to balancing the natural ecosystem. We hope our work can convey the importance of environmental protection and maintaining biodiversity to the public.”
The “Green Memorial” team, whose work explored green burial, also received a scholarship. Team member Pang Wing-chun hopes their piece will raise awareness about eco-friendly funerals. “After conducting interviews, we realised that public knowledge about green burial is limited, especially among the elderly who consider the topic taboo. We hope our work can promote this environmentally friendly concept and help more people understand the significance behind green burial.”
Mr Felix Lee Kin-ming, Head of Group ESG / Head of Group Corporate Affairs at Towngas, expressed his delight at seeing the rising news acumen of Hong Kong’s new generation. “The participating teams’ reports were comprehensive, content-rich, and provided in-depth analysis of various ESG issues. The quality of their layout, shooting and video editing was impressive. Next year, we plan to continue our collaboration with HSUHK in a new format, hoping to engage more students and nurture more journalism and communication talent well-versed in ESG. We also welcome students to intern in Towngas’ Corporate Affairs or ESG departments to apply their knowledge practically.”
Professor Scarlet Tso Hung, Dean of the School of Communication at HSUHK, thanked Towngas for organising the ESG Scholarship Programme, which supports students in applying the knowledge and skills learned at university. “This scholarship programme has provided students with profound insights into ESG, raised their awareness of environmental protection, and helped them understand their role as communicators in spreading the concept of sustainable development through their professional skills, thereby promoting social development and progress through their work.”
