When asked to comment, Paulding said, “A seasoned attorney can help you build a strong case and attack the prosecutor’s evidence. You will need to do both if you want to be found not guilty.”
Sex crime charges are very serious and could have severe repercussions for anyone found guilty of such an offense.
“Sex crimes are more often than not classified as felony offenses and are taken extremely serious by police and the courts. Some sex crimes include Rape, Forcible Sodomy, Taking Indecent Liberties with a Child and Object Sexual Penetration,” she explained.
“Being found guilty could lead to a lengthy prison sentence or sex offender registration, or both. This makes it even more important for anyone accused of a sex crime offense to know exactly what to do,” she said.
Many people – particularly those who have been falsely accused of a sex crime – tend to make the mistake of trying to resolve their case themselves, instead of seeking outside help. After all, the citizen who is inexperienced with the criminal justice system may very well assume that their actual innocence will be enough, when the police and prosecutor look at that case carefully enough, to result in the dropping of the charges. Sadly, this is almost never true.
“The best thing you can do is to contact a seasoned attorney. In other words, don’t try to take matters into your own hands by speaking with police officers or with anyone involved in the case. This will often make things worse and will, in fact, often strengthen the State’s case against you,” Paulding said.
An experienced criminal defense attorney will be able to put together a strong defense that pokes holes in the other side’s argument.
Paulding went on to say that whatever the case, a criminal defense attorney will cut through the noise and build the strongest case possible to help fight both the actual sex crime charges, and the stigma that has no place attaching to those who are falsely accused of such a crime.
