-- Theatre of Life Productions has announced that its upcoming feature The Death of Ivan Ilych—adapted from Leo Tolstoy’s timeless novella—is now in late development. Set in late 19th-century Russia, the story follows Ivan Ilych, a high court judge who has lived a life of ambition and propriety without confronting his own impermanence—until illness forces him to face the inevitable. His journey from fear to acceptance becomes a profound meditation on the possibility of grace at the end of life.

Drawing inspiration from cinema masters such as Andrei Tarkovsky, Ingmar Bergman, and Luchino Visconti, the film blends poetic imagery with deeply human storytelling. Academy Award–nominated British composer John Cameron (Kes, A Touch of Class) is attached to create the score, bringing a rich and timeless musical dimension to the adaptation.

Talks are also underway with acclaimed art-house collaborators in acting, cinematography, design, and editing, with further announcements to be revealed soon.

“Tolstoy’s story is not about death alone—it is about the rediscovery of life,” said director Nicholas Rooney. “We aim to honour the novella’s spiritual depth while crafting a cinematic journey that speaks to today’s audiences.”

Positioned for major international film festivals, The Death of Ivan Ilych reflects Theatre of Life Productions’ commitment to cinema that unites artistic ambition with enduring human themes.
