-- As global economies push toward electrification and sustainable infrastructure, engineers and innovators working behind the scenes are redefining how nations prepare for an energy-secure future. The Written Owl is proud to spotlight Himanshu Bindal, a pioneering thermal engineer at ABB E-Mobility, whose work is directly contributing to America’s power resilience and infrastructure modernization.

At a time when the U.S. power grid faces increased instability due to surging demand, intermittent supply, and growing electrification, Bindal is helping deliver solutions that are both technologically advanced and nationally relevant. His recent collaboration with Imagen Energy—a Department of Energy-backed venture—is bringing to life megawatt-scale bidirectional inverter systems designed to act as intelligent energy buffers. These systems are already being deployed for high-power EV charging, and their applications extend to hospitals, industrial facilities, community centers, and beyond.

“We’re not just designing equipment—we’re enabling the infrastructure that can supports everything from ICU ventilators to AI data centers,” said Bindal. “This is about national resilience.”

The Written Owl notes that Bindal’s core expertise lies in designing cutting-edge thermal management systems that ensure high-density power electronics operate under extreme conditions—extending system life, improving safety, and reducing costs. His air- and liquid-cooled systems support megawatt-class power conversion platforms, which can play a key role in grid stabilization and decentralized energy storage.

Bindal’s journey into energy systems innovation began during his academic years in Dehradun, India, and later at Michigan Technological University, where his focus on efficient, resilient systems took root. At Hitachi America’s Industrial Innovation Lab, he led R&D on thermally robust automotive electronics—laying the groundwork for the national-scale systems he engineers today.

His portfolio includes multiple patents, including a 2024-patented free piston engine that directly converts thermal energy into electricity—designed for off-grid and modular energy needs.

“Innovation, for me, means enabling others to build smarter, cleaner, and more reliable systems,” said Bindal.

As the U.S. accelerates its clean energy goals, the work of engineers like Bindal exemplifies how behind-the-scenes innovation is critical to national progress. Through public-private partnerships, system-level thinking, and technical rigor, Bindal is helping future-proof America’s energy infrastructure—one design at a time.
