-- Thai Union Group today announced proactive plans to diversify its mackerel sourcing, taking a direct step to alleviate pressure on the at-risk Northeast Atlantic mackerel stock (Scomber scombrus).
Beginning in 2026, the company will shift its focus toward more abundant and sustainable mackerel species, such as Scomber colias. This move, part of Thai Union’s SeaChange® 2030 sustainability strategy, directly responds to new scientific advice from the International Council for the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) urging for a significant reduction in catches of Scomber scombrus to protect the long-term health of the species.
In addition to its own sourcing changes, Thai Union continues to advocate for wider industry action as an active member of the North Atlantic Pelagics Advocacy Group (NAPA). NAPA, a coalition of seafood businesses and organizations, is calling on the coastal nations managing the fishery to set catch quotas that align with scientific recommendations during their negotiations later this month.
