-- Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. (TSE: 5713) is pleased to announce that its agricultural project, "(Un)dangered Vegetables," which supports the cultivation of heirloom vegetables that have long played an important role in local food cultures across Japan, has won the Gold Award - the highest honor - in the PR & ESG category at the Jolbors Awards International 2026, an international creative awards program born in Central Asia.
The project focuses on heirloom vegetables at risk of extinction due to factors including global warming. In this project, these vegetables are referred to as "endangered vegetables." As part of the project, Sumitomo Metal Mining has supplied heat-shielding agricultural nets utilizing its materials technology, SOLAMENT™, while also undertaking initiatives to raise awareness of heirloom vegetables and help pass on their cultivation practices to future generations. These comprehensive efforts were recognized with the Gold Award at the Jolbors Awards International 2026.
SOLAMENT is Sumitomo Metal Mining's materials technology, based on near-infrared-absorbing nanoparticles patented in Japan and other countries. The technology allows visible light to pass through while absorbing near-infrared radiation, which causes temperature increases. It is being utilized for heat-shielding and other applications across a wide range of fields, including automotive, architecture, outdoor goods, apparel, and agriculture.
For the brand development of SOLAMENT, Sumitomo Metal Mining has collaborated with Droga5 Tokyo, part of Accenture Song.
Sumitomo Metal Mining will continue to accelerate the expansion of SOLAMENT into a diverse range of fields as a material that contributes to solving social issues.
