-- Dressing in traditional Chinese attire, listening to golden oldies, enjoying live performances, and trying intangible cultural heritage handicrafts… Recently, 157 contestants from 137 countries and regions participating in the 25th "Chinese Bridge" Competition gathered at Xiamen's "Time Meets Island" themed scenic area, embarking on an immersive journey to experience Minnan culture.
Amidst ancient streets and storied pavilions, young people from different countries eagerly changed into traditional Hanfu, immersing themselves in the unique Minnan landscape. Xin Yaoning, a contestant from New Zealand, was particularly captivated by the dragon patterns embroidered on the clothing and the accessories, openly stating that he was deeply drawn in by the cultural meaning behind them.
The "Someday, When Will You Return?" (Aerial Piano Show) brought classic Minnan and Taiwanese musical hits into a rousing mix, igniting resonance across the crowd. Young participants from multiple countries sang along together, drawing closer through song. When Kong Fengmei from Botswana heard "The Moon Represents My Heart," she immediately joined in, remarking, "I've been able to sing this song for a long time. Chinese songs are very charming."
Next came the immersive performance "Echoes Through the Millennium," Tracing the story of Su Song, a scientist of the Northern Song who developed the Water-powered Armillary & Celestial Tower, the show vividly recreated Minnan customs and traditions of the Song and Yuan dynasties, and unveiled a historical panorama of diverse civilizations intermingling along the Maritime Silk Road.
Beyond the performances, experiential activities such as Bo Bing (a traditional dice game), surname culture interactions, and intangible cultural heritage handicrafts rolled out one after another. Through these interactive activities, young people from around the world experienced different facets of Minnan culture.
That day, the contestants also visited Xiamen Tianma Micro-electronics and Meitu, among other tech and innovation companies, where they observed cutting-edge technological achievements firsthand, from high-end displays to AI imaging. They truly came away with a strong sense of the innovative energy behind Xiamen "intelligent" manufacturing.
From ancient charm to modern intelligent manufacturing, young people from various countries experienced a vibrant and multifaceted Minnan through this blend of old and new. In turn, they will share this unique cultural memory through their stories, bringing it to more corners of the world.
